MEXICO CITY, Nov 5 (IPS) - A torch honouring Mexico's patron saint, Our Lady of Guadalupe, was carried across the border into the United States on Friday, as part of a two-month relay from Mexico City to New York aimed at demanding respect for the rights of Mexicans and other Hispanic immigrants in the United States.

It is generally believed by anthropologists that the Virgin of Guadalupe and Tonantzin are one in the same, and that this is one of many examples of how ancient Indian beliefs have become fused into the unique spiritual reality of "modern" Mexicans.
