Demographic War - Arkansas

Hispanic leader says census count is low

Although new census estimates show Arkansas had the fastest Hispanic growth rate in the nation over the last decade, state Hispanic leaders said Wednesday the group is still undercounted and underrepresented in Arkansas. The census data is important because it bolsters the state's standing in applying for money to fund Hispanic services, said Cesar Compadre, director of the central Arkansas council of LULAC.

Suffolk to Tackle Hot Topics - Issues range from immigration to guns

Members of Sachem Quality of Life, a main supporter of the legislation, plan to attend an August 8 meeting in Riverhead en masse. They say they are livid over the influx of "illegal aliens" into Farmingville, which they say has prompted a rise in crime and plummeting property values. "We'd rather have 10 [Army or National Guard] tanks on the street than 400 illegals," said Ray Wysolmierski, a member of the group, who has launched a cable TV program called, "Whose Community Is It Anyway?"

....adding to the South Carolina victory from yesterday; the Buchanan Foster campaign was just informed by the Montana Secratary of state that Pat Buchanan and Ezola Foster are the official Presdiential and Vice Presidential Reform Party Nominees for the state. Likewise, news equally as good was received earlier today regarding the state of California.

Newly released U.S. Census Bureau estimates for 1999 show the population growth rate of Hispanics in Brunswick County among the fastest in North Carolina. Census estimates show Brunswick County's Hispanic population nearly tripled from 376 in 1990 to 1,108 in 1990.

Senator Calls For Spanish Driver's Manuals

State Senator Dean Johnson says driver license manuals are all printed in English, even though many areas of the state have many Spanish-speaking residents. Public Safety Commissioner Charlie Weaver says there are six-languages spoken in Minnesota and it would be costly for the state to print manuals in each one.

DC AREA CONFRONTS MASS IMMIGRATION

Two stories in the Washington Post today illustrate the ways mass immigration is impacting the Washington DC metro area. First, a report about immigrant parents and students reveals that Maryland schools are having difficulty coping with the influx of foreign students. Second, the Arlington county (Virginia) public schools are setting up immigrant- only gifted education classes.

Mexican Merger: United We Fall

The elites of the United States and Mexico have pursued a deliberate policy of encouraging large- scale immigration. The elites of the United States want cheap labor. The elites of Mexico want to get rid of their unemployed, not to mention the remittances that they subsequently send home from the United States. The Mexican Government has as little interest in stemming the flow of immigrants to the North as it has in stopping the narcotics trade.

Agencies Serving Public Told to Offer Interpreters

In Los Angeles, where 40% of the population is foreign-born and more than 100 languages are spoken, offering competent language assistance will be a challenge, say health care advocates and providers. In the 1990 census, 50% of Latinos were identified as having limited English proficiency. Among newer Asian immigrants, more than 60% said they had limited English proficiency.

Study: Georgia Latinos need aid adjusting

"The state as a whole hasn't really adjusted to the fact that Latinos are here," said Stephanie Bohon, a sociology professor conducting the study. "The population in general hasn't recognized that they're here and they're staying." Bohon said many people praise Latinos for their work ethic, but that could change. "If the economy goes bad, there'll be a tendency among everyone to . . . say, 'These Latinos are taking our jobs,' " she said.

New Demographics Changing Everything

While the numbers for Latinos and Asians are startling, the transformation has happened gradually during the past decade. Whites already have been a minority in the state's public school classrooms for more than a decade. And a bigger minority population is on the way, said Baldassare, with even more dramatic changes ahead. By midcentury, he said, the state's Latino population alone will outnumber whites.
