NBC Nightly News -- October 11
Arizona ranchers fear being overrun by drug smugglers
Field supervisors have been ordered by Washington officials to downplay the smuggling threats, a former DEA supervisor says – a charge U.S. Customs and Border Protection vehemently denies. NBC's Mark Potter reports.
Brian Williams, NBC News: The recent friendly fire death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent, in Arizona, has once again put security in the spotlight, and some are now asking whether the Obama Administration is trying to downplay what is really happening. [...]
Mark Potter, NBC News: Arizona rancher John Ladd whose ranch includes 8 miles of Mexican border fence says while fewer illegal immigrants cross his ranch now, he is overrun by drug smugglers and fears many are armed.
Ladd: They have no regard for us or anyone. and if they want to do us harm, they're going to do it.
Potter: This video shot by a hidden camera on his land shows a group of smugglers carrying bales of marijuana, which Ladd says he sees regularly. He also says Mexican smugglers cut big holes like this is the border fence, and this year drove nearly 21 trucks though it --- he believes loaded with drugs --- headed north across his ranch land.
Ladd: The problem is our government at the highest level doesn't want to admit what the reality is that we have been invaded.
David Aguilar, Acting Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection: Overall, the border is safer than it has ever been.
