Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa Fails Upward
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa these days is Mr. Popular. Yahoo News even wondered whether he might be presidential material. To which we respond, have you been to L.A. lately?
Telegenic and glib, Villaraigosa currently serves as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and this week will preside over the Democratic Party convention in Charleston, N.C. He's a politician built for the media age, which has led to a series of prominent posts --- including a place on President Obama's Economic Advisory Transition Board in 2008.
He's been lauded far and wide and showered with honors --- puzzling, since Villaraigosa may be the worst mayor in L.A. history.
During his tenure, thousands of businesses have fled L.A.'s mismanagement and soaring taxes, taking jobs with them.
The city has lost close to 140,000 jobs since the 2007 financial crisis. While other cities have rebounded, L.A.'s unemployment rate hovers well above 10%.
On the verge of bankruptcy, L.A. is a shell city with a shrinking tax base, Los Angeles City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana warned just last April.
American Patrol Report Comment
If the Republicans don't point out that Villaraigosa helped kill Prop. 187 the one chance L.A. had to save itself - they are cowards. (So what's new?) |

National Review wrong (again) on race and welfare
After the purging of John Derbyshire earlier this year, it is increasingly clear that nobody at National Review knows or dares to say anything about race. But much worse, they can't be bothered to look up the basic facts about things such as demographics and welfare. It almost seems as if the political correctness that led to the firing of Derbyshire has blinded them to plain, numerical facts... |
