Drug War on I-8
Concerned Citizens Stand Their Ground
American Patrol Report -- May 16
Concerned citizens gather near Interstate 8 in Arizona. Items used in the smuggling trade are hung on the fence.
For the past few months a group of concerned citizens has been focusing on the use of Interstate 8 in Arizona as a major conduit for transporting drugs and illegal aliens. Using automatic trail cameras, they have produced absolute proof of the problem. (See our May 5 feature and our Photo of the Day of December 31, 2009).
The problem is particularly severe near Gila Bend -- near the spot where a Pinal County sheriffs deputy was ambushed and shot by drug smugglers.
Although 70 miles from the border, smugglers area able to cross the desert on dirt roads and up the large wash that intersects I-8. They even cross the Barry Goldwater bombing range.
On Saturday, these concerned citizens put themselves where the automatic cameras had been. Despite the risk, these brave Americans placed themselves in harms way to call attention to the threat their nation is facing and maybe even offer a deterrent.
