Gardens dies
Torrance, Calif. - 6:24 PM -- Los
Angeles Sheriff's deputy Jerry Ortiz has been pronounced dead
at Harbor- UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. He was shot in the
head while doing a gang investigation in Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.
earlier today, according to information reported at a news conference
at the medical center. The suspect remains at large at this time.

This is a situation that has been going on since about 3:30 pm
PDT. At least one officer has been shot by an apparent gangster.
An area resident interviewed on the air live said that the area
is a "rat's nest", that shots are heard every day in
the area, and that the area is crawling with illegal aliens.

in prison Thursday for child smuggling, authorities said. --
Diana Correa pleaded guilty in April to a charge of conspiracy
