Bush's Final Chance for Redemption

Sierra Vista, AZ -- American Border Patrol, the non-profit border watchdog group, is launching a major effort to assess progress of the Bush Administration in controlling the Arizona/Mexico border. Pegged "October Surmise," the project will involve the use of high tech gear, including the Border Hawk UAV, ground sensors and infrared cameras. According to Glenn Spencer, head of ABP, the media are already responding. "HDNet is just finishing its work and major network affiliate will be here Tuesday," Spencer said. "On October 25 we are going to render our opinion as to whether the Bush Administration is serious about controlling the border, or whether its efforts are nothing more than a hoax." "This president has one final chance for redemption," Spencer added.
Spencer said tax deductible donations are greatly appreciated.

Bisbee, Arizona -- Small rural hospitals such as Copper Queen Community Hospital in Bisbee will be partly reimbursed for treating illegal immigrants [criminals] under a new law that takes effect today. -- The Medicare Prescription Drug and Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 will allow hospitals to be reimbursed at a small percentage for treating illegal immigrants...AP Internal Use Only

Arizona's Prop. 200
TIME Magazine
Border War in Arizona (Prop. 200 hugely popular)
Proposition 200, an Arizona ballot initiative aimed at illegal immigrants, would seem to have little going for it. Virtually the entire political, business and religious establishment of the state - including Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano, Republican Senator John McCain and the state's three Catholic bishops - is lined up against it. Police: Immigration crackdown has reduced violent gang crime
Charlotte, N.C. (AP) -- A yearlong crackdown on immigration violations has led to a drop in gang-related violence in the Charlotte area, according to police. -- More than 100 members of Charlotte street gangs have been arrested on immigration violations in the last 16 months. Most of those who were later deported are members of Mara Salvatrucha 13, a traditionally Salvadoran gang considered just a year ago to be the city's most violent.AP Internal Use Only

Dems disown RINO Dreier's opposition candidate
This news is from last week, but seems not to have gotten any notice. Cynthia Matthews, Republican Congressman David Dreier's Democrat opponent in the race for California's 26th Congressional District, has been officially disowned by her own party over the illegal immigrant issue. Matthews has been outspoken opposed to illegal immigration and the corporations who hire them (she wants laws against hiring enforced), and reported on the John and Ken radio talk show...AP Internal Use Only

MALDEF meddlers, other subversives whine over vetoes
San Diego (AP) - Last year, as he ran for governor criticizing the passage of a law that would allow illegal immigrants, most of them Hispanic, to get driver's licenses, Arnold Schwarzenegger was criticized for not being sensitive enough to Hispanic issues. -- Now, after his round of bill signings and vetoes as governor, that criticism has emerged again. -- Bills championing causes important to many Hispanics - such as a revived driver's license bill...AP Internal Use Only

Arizona's Prop. 200
Jon Talton -- Arizona Republic - Phoenix
Prop. 200 supporters: Not all bigots, just grappling with change
I am the voice of a voter who supports Proposition 200. -- It's not an anti-immigrant thing, as columnists like Jon Talton say. My friends and I come from immigrant stock. But those immigrants came legally. -- I'm not a bigot. There may be bigots who support it, but they aren't the majority.AP Internal Use Only

VETO Cedillo's Folly
The Provo Daily Herald - Ruben Navarrette Jr.
Illegal immigrants, driver's licenses don't mix
There is a saying in politics: "There are no permanent friends or permanent enemies -- just permanent interests." -- Now, in their relentless campaign to get driver's licenses issued to illegal immigrants, Latino activists in California bring to mind a slightly different phrasing: "If you don't know who your friends are, you'll make enemies. And that just isn't in your best interest." -- Those activists have a new foil: California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger...AP Internal Use Only

Associated Press
Usual suspects miffed over arrest of foreign invaders
Faribault, Minn. - As more people were arraigned on drug charges after a massive bust in the area, authorities defended the detention of suspected illegal immigrants [criminals] who were not targets of the raid. -- Immigration lawyer Susana De Leon [who is also a 'Chicano Studies' zealot] said agents overstepped their authority by detaining people who were not targets of the investigation. She accused agents of using the drug raids to carry out a "fishing expedition" for illegal immigrants. [Tell Susana to go pound sand]AP Internal Use Only

As Reservoirs Recede, Fears of a Water Shortage Rise
Page, Ariz. - Behind Glen Canyon Dam spreads a vista reincarnated. One of the West's mightiest reservoirs is in steady retreat, the deep turquoise of its waters replaced by the chalky white of canyon walls submerged four decades ago. -- Five years of record-breaking drought in the Colorado River basin have drained Lake Powell of more than 60% of its water.
