Man arrested in Mexico for Iowa illegal alien deaths
Mexican police have arrested a suspected smuggler for the deaths of 11 migrants who were trapped inside a grain car in Iowa last year, law authorities said Sunday. -- Lorenzo Cuellar de Lira is part of an international smuggling gang responsible for helping the migrants board the train on the fatal trip, the attorney general's office said in a statement. -- It was unclear where and when he was arrested, and a spokesman for the federal attorney general's office did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Cops target black market ring
Medford police have arrested an alleged band of professional shoplifters who steal infant formula and sell it at flea markets in large U.S. cities and in developing countries. -- Police recovered 577 cans of formula, valued at $6,400. -- Four people were arrested on charges of first-degree theft and of being illegal aliens. Because the four, who are from Honduras, lacked proper identification, police called the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, which helped translate and filed the immigration charges.

More of the same
Singling out polluters, guns, and energy providers as California's greatest evils, and citing "a severe budget shortfall," Governor Gray Davis told the audience of his State of the State Address that what they see in California "is a national crisis, affecting nearly every state in America. [...] Unemployment is up. Exports are down. Growth is stagnant. Markets are at near-record lows." Not withstanding almost certain exaggeration on Davis' part who, quite obviously, attempted to divert California voters' attention from his role in creation of the humongous budget deficit, the situation isn't rosy, indeed.

Foreigners stiffing Fla. hospitals
Florida hospitals are racking up millions in unpaid bills from medical care provided to uninsured non-U.S. citizens, and the tab will escalate without federal legislative reform, a new study shows. -- The Florida Hospital Association has released findings that show the number of uninsured noncitizens being admitted into hospitals, most frequently through the costly emergency room, has nearly doubled from 1997 to 2001, with 7,600 admissions.

U.S. Border Crossings Spark Civilian Patrols
...Embarrassing the government is part of the plan, said Glenn Spencer, whose American Border Patrol began its operations Jan. 2. It uses armed members with high-tech video surveillance equipment to detect border crossers and broadcast their moves on the Internet. On Jan. 4, Spencer said, the group was called by a rancher complaining of border crossers through his property. They filmed 30 suspected border crossers being apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol on the rancher's property and broadcast the tape live on their Web site.

Setback for Fox and U.S.-Mexico Relations
The resignation of Mexico's foreign minister, Jorge Castaneda, could be a major blow to the Fox government, a death sentence for its refurbished foreign policy and a setback for the new relationship between Mexico and the United States. -- Castaneda has good reason to pack up his bags and go home. Mexico's more assertive foreign policy has been a source of constant controversy since its inception in President Vicente Fox's administration. -- Some Mexicans congratulate Fox for seeking closer ties with the United States, while others condemn him for it. Some applaud Mexico's pursuit of an immigration accord, while others denounce it as a waste of time.

Illegal alien drug thieves captured
Ingenious bands of drug thieves who allegedly raked in tens of millions of dollars by swiping over-the-counter medications from the shelves of drugstore chains were arrested yesterday after a five-month police undercover sting. -- According to NYPD Bronx Inspector Kevin Unick, the largest of the three rings netted $25 million a year in nonprescription drugs. -- Five people were arrested, and two are being probed for possible funding of terror groups. -- "These are outstanding arrests," Unick said

Illegal immigrants who want IDs know how to fake it
...Salvador Martinez-Gonzalez. Martinez-Gonzalez is an illegal immigrant who spent two happy years working at the White House, setting up tents for receptions and other events on the grounds. He was arrested on Dec. 2 while attempting to re-enter the United States from Mexico. Touchingly, among the items found on his person were snapshots of him standing alongside Bill Clinton, Vice President Dick Cheney and other luminaries.

Holland, Mich. may accept sham Mexican IDs
It's a simple card -- made to be carried in a wallet, pocket or purse -- but it's at the forefront of the immigration debate in the city of Holland and the nation. -- The card doesn't contain much information, just a photo, a current address, where a person was born and a birthdate. -- And yet, to those who have it, the card can help open a bank account and prove identity. -- On Wednesday night, the Holland City Council will be asked to adopt the "matricula consular" card as a piece of official documentation...

46 illegal aliens arrested in chase
