Group
calls for probe
of U.S. border vigilantes

 |
...Glenn Spencer,
of the American Border Patrol, has denied the hate group label
imposed on his California-based organization - Voices of Citizens
Together - and repeated in Wednesday's report.
However, he agreed with the report's call for
an investigation.
"It needs to be a broad investigation
that looks at Mexico's intrusion into affairs of the U.S. and
the affiliations between these organizations and a Mexican government,
whose objective it is to reverse the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
and exert control over the southwestern United States,"
said Spencer. He added that members of his organizations include
people of various races, ethnic backgrounds and religious creeds. |

Kilgore's
proposals on illegal aliens sensible
If enough people commit a crime, should
it be legalized? -- That seems to be the chief argument against
a proposed law by Virginia Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore
that seeks to keep illegal aliens from obtaining Virginia driver's
licenses or attending college at in-state tuition rates. -- The
Mexican
American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, a nonprofit
Latino advocacy, litigation and educational outreach institution,
opposes the bill. |

Halt
to Ariz. Citizen Border Patrols Urged
Immigrants' rights activists on Wednesday
urged Arizona's incoming governor to stop citizens' groups that
patrol border areas looking for illegal immigrants and smugglers.
-- Members of the Border Action Network asked Gov.-elect Janet
Napolitano to investigate the legality of the armed groups and
their actions, which are aimed at curbing illegal border crossings.
-- "It's not their
job to defend, to harass people, stalk people, injure people.
That's nobody's job," said Jennifer Allen, co-director of
the Tucson-based organization. "They [illegal immigrants]
have civil rights and human rights that take precedence over
defending the country." |

U.S.,
Mexico seek to align benefits
Pushed by the Mexican government, the
Bush administration is working on a Social Security accord that
would put tens of thousands of Mexicans onto the Social Security
roster and send hundreds of millions of dollars in benefits south
of the border. -- White House and Mexican government officials
say discussions on an agreement to align the Social Security
systems of the two countries are informal and preliminary. But
excerpts from an internal Social Security Administration memo
obtained this month says the agreement "is expected to move
forward at an accelerated pace," with the support of both
governments, and could be in force by next October. |
