Re: "Illegal Immigration" -- by NPR's Claudio Sanchez, Monday Oct. 2310/23/01
The segment, "Illegal Immigration" by NPR's Claudio Sanchez, Monday Oct. 23, was outstanding. There was, however, one glaring omission from your list of those who undermined earlier efforts to deter illegal immigration (growers, La Raza, hotel industry, Libertarians, etc.). This was NPR itself.
For years NPR has been a cheerleader for illegal immigration by its innumerable sob stories of illegal immigrants as victims, of endless propaganda pieces on the modern miracle of diversity and the repeated mythology of the New American.
Perhaps Sept. 11th has made a dent in the impenetrable, one-sided coverage of this by NPR.
If so, you might end the use of the euphemistic "undocumented worker" in future pieces and embrace the more blunt but honest "illegal immigrant".
You might even take the next step and examine the downside of the massive, legal immigration we have been allowing. Certainly the specter of one billion Americans by the end of the century is deserving a closer look.
