....Today's crossers, the majority from Mexico, head north for economic opportunities rather than to escape political persecution.
"Sanctuary was an appropriate response in the 1980s, with the Central America refugee crisis at the border," said the Rev. John Fife, 62, a movement co-founder and one of 11 people indicted on federal smuggling charges.
Eight of them, including Fife, were convicted but not sent to prison.
"Now we have a new crisis with different circumstances but one with morality at its heart and which calls for the religious community to take leadership again," said Fife, still the pastor at Southside Presbyterian Church. -- More...
