Verbatim transcript of Vicky Castro speaking before the Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project -- June 14, 1997
Vicky Castro on the roll of Spanish-language media in winning the vote for Proposition BB - the bond measure to spend $2 billion on schools.
"We have KMEX in Los Angeles as a major partner in this campaign to get out the Latino vote. So what is the reality check to them? They didn't smell the votes from the, uh, November election. And I want to applaud KMEX's efforts, because they helped ensure that vote. (Applause) Every day, every hour, they were there telling us to vote. Spanish radio, they were there telling us to get out and vote."
"The news on Spanish-language television isn't objective; it's propaganda."
Vicky Castro on voter registration for Proposition BB
"How did we get there? And I saw him back here, unknown to Southwest with Ruben uh, Villareal, grassroot organizer, we trained one hundred precinct walkers - love this? I didn't check their citizenship, but they had children. I didn't check their language ability, but they were trained to be precinct leaders. They went through many challenges, though, those one hundred women. Uh, many of their spouses said 'you're not even a citizen! Why are you working on that campaign?' 'You're not this, why are you working on this campaign?' There are, uh, talk about those battles that you share with us You have one hundred women out there who have never worked a campaign but in my opinion who delivered BB. I think they should all be applauded."
VCT note: Non-citizens are not allowed to register voters.
