Dr. Armando Navarro to Lead National Delegation on Zapatista March into Mexico City
by Hector Carreon
La Voz de AztlanRiverside, Alta California (February 2, 2001) - (ACN) National Leader Dr. Armando Navarro has informed La Voz de Aztlan that he will be leading a National Delegation of Chicanos and Mexicanos on the Zapatista March into Mexico City. "This is part of our 'Acercamiento' with Mexico efforts we begun 13 years ago under the organization Impacto 1988" said Dr. Navarro. "Our purpose of joining the march along with the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional (EZLN) is to demonstrate our solidarity with the indigenous people of Mexico" Dr. Navarro stated. "It is important for us on this side of the border to continue our friendship and unity with our brethren in Mexico" he emphasized.
Subcomandante Marcos and twenty three Comandantes will begin the march in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas on February 25. The march will follow the same historic route that General Emiliano Zapata took during the Mexican Revolution and will arrive at the Zocalo in Tenochtitlan between March 6 and March 11. The U.S. National Chicano/Mexicano Delegation will join the march at a point to be determined along the march. The Zapatistas have agreed to march without weapons but will wear their masks in the negotiations for peace with the central government.
The Zapatista March to Mexico City has attracted international attention and the Mexican central government in Mexico D.F. has placed, at this date, strict visa requirements on foreign citizens who may wish to travel to Mexico as observers. No foreign national can directly participate in the march or they will be expelled and not allowed to return to Mexico for ten years. In order to get around this requirement, Dr. Armando Navarro will be working with the Mexican Consulate to expedite the granting of Dual Nationality to the U.S. Chicano/Mexicano Delegation. The plan is to hold a mass Dual Nationality Ceremony and a press conference in Los Angeles prior to traveling to Mexico for the Zapatista March.
Dr. Armando Navarro has informed La Voz de Aztlan that he welcomes any of our subscribers, family members or friends to be members of the U.S. Chicano/Mexicano Delegation. If you want to join the Zapatistas in this historic march into Tenochtitlan and want to regain your Mexican Nationality while retaining your U.S. citizenship you are encouraged to contact Dr. Armando Navarro at navarro@ucrac1.ucr.edu or La Voz de Aztlan for further information at Zapatista@Aztlan.Net . La Voz de Aztlan has a webpage at http://www.aztlan.net/dualcit.htm that outlines the Dual Nationality Program. "Those who want to participate only as observers are also welcomed" stated Dr. Armando Navarro.
