Raleigh Group Seeks Arrest and Deportation of Nationwide Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride -- Claim North Carolina Targeted
Who: Stop the Invasion
When: Tuesday, September 30, 2003. 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Where: Downtown Durham (500 block of W. Chapel Hill)Tuesday, protesters from the Raleigh-based immigration reform organization, Stop the Invasion! will be demanding the arrest and deportation of illegal alien participants in the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride to be held in downtown Durham. The Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride is a group traveling across the country attempting to call attention to the plight of "immigrants." They claim to be inspired by the Freedom Riders of the Civil Rights Movement.
"They are demanding 'rights' for illegal aliens, people who shouldn't even be here in the first place." stated Randy Lewis, spokesperson for Stop the Invasion! the group organizing the protest. "Some of the rights that they are demanding for illegal aliens are driver's licenses, vehicle insurance and amnesty to become legal U.S. citizens.
"By blurring the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants, they are attempting to obliterate the fact that we are a nation of laws. Can U.S. citizens pick and choose which laws they want to obey?" he added.
"North Carolina appears to have been specifically targeted for their nationwide efforts. They will be making seven stops in North Carolina in the next two days. California only had three stops," he noted.
"We don't want illegal aliens in North Carolina and we certainly don't want to encourage them coming here. What these people are doing is aiding and abetting criminal behavior. They should be arrested and deported. We need another Operation Wetback, similar to what occurred in 1953 under President Eisenhower," he stated.
