"One need look no further than the rally's flyer for proof. The logo is of a person peering over a barbed wire fence that symbolizes the border. The face is an artistic rendering of a map with eyes drawn in to complete the suggestion of a migrant. On closer examination, one can see that the map that comprises the migrant's face is that of Mexico and the southwestern United States joined together as one. It is a graphic merger of Mexico and what some call "Aztlan." It is a graphic statement that the organizers of this rally intend to carve up the United States of America!"

Vehement reconquista

We are gathered here today to protest a so-called rally for peace headed by Professor Armando Navarro. This rally is a sham. Navarro and his Mexican allies from across the border are using so-called human rights as a smoke screen to cover the invasion of the United States by Mexico. This is not a rally for peace, it is a rally for a piece of the United States of America.

One need look no further than the rally's flier for proof. It is a graphic merger of Mexico and what some call "Aztlan." It is a graphic statement that the organizers of this rally intend to carve up the United States of America!

Mexicans use the term "Aztlan" to represent lands ceded to the United States as part of the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, plus the Republic of Texas. They claim "Aztlan" was stolen from them. It was not. They claim the Aztecs once lived here. They did not.

Aztlan is the "A" in MEChA, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, the separatist student movement which gave political birth to many present California political leaders, including former Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa and current Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante. Both have proven their loyalty to Mexico.

The dream of conquering Aztlan lies deep in the heart of the Mexican psyche. A recent poll shows that most Mexicans don't believe it is wrong to cross the border because this land was stolen from them. This explains why some are willing to risk death. Their goal is more than jobs, it is conquest. They believe what they are doing is noble. They are defying the Gringo to take back what is rightfully Mexico's.

Mexicans are not dying because ranchers turn them over to the Border Patrol.

Mexicans are dying in the desert because their government tells them they have a right to conquer America. The Mexican government encourages migration. The Mexican government creates conditions such as NAFTA that

encourage the movement of their people into the United States.

Mexicans are dying in the desert because they know they will not be punished for invading the United States. They know they will be treated as honored guests, returned to Mexico by a emasculated Border Patrol that knows full well they will simply continue trying until they get past them. It is a game that America loses 1.5 million times a year.

Mexicans are dying in the desert because they know that once they are in the United States they are home free. They know that the Bill Clinton has stopped enforcing immigration laws within the United States.

Mexicans are dying in the desert because their new president-elect, Vicente Fox, promised to open the borders in five years.

Mexicans are dying in the desert because they believe that, once here, they will ultimately be granted amnesty. They believe this because there are powerful forces such as the Catholic Church, the Ford Foundation, the AFL/CIO and the Democrat Party who tell them it is so.

But you needn't take my word. Listen to the words of the main players in this drama.

Mario Obledo, co-founder of the Mexican Americans Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), and winner, 1998 Presidential Medal of Freedom, June, 1998:

THE CO-FOUNDER OF
MALDEF

Mario Obledo, a hero for our times

Why am I not surprised at the heroic action which Mario Obledo has taken in bringing down that offensive billboard in Blythe, Califaztlan? The sign warns other states to not become what some racists believe California has become - namely: the Mojado (I use the word con cariño) State......

"Were going to take over all the political institutions of California. In five years, Hispanics are going to be the majority in this state." [CLICK HERE for RealAudio clip.]

Caller to talk show:
"You also made the statement that California is going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn't like it should leave. Did you say that?
Obledo:
"I did." "They ought to go back to Europe."

Art Torres, Chairman, California Democrat Party, January, 1995:

"Remember, 187 is the last gasp of white America in California." [CLICK HERE for RealAudio clip.]

Armando Navarro, Professor of Chicano Studies, UC Riverside

February 2, 1997
"People of color are going to be the majority population in this nation. That means for the first time the white population is going to be a minority in supposedly their own country.".

January 15, 1995
"Ladies and Gentlemen, what this means is a transfer of power, it means control, and it is the young people, the people who are now moving to develop an agenda for the twenty first century they are going to be in a position to really make the promise of what the Chicano movement was all about in terms of self-determination, in terms of empowerment, even in the terms of an idea of an Aztlan!" Ernesto Zedillo, president of Mexico, July 23, 1997:

"I have proudly affirmed that the Mexican nation extends beyond the territory enclosed by its borders and that Mexican migrants are an important, a very important part of it.' [CLICK HERE for RealAudio clip.]

Lamar Smith, Chairman, House Subcommittee on Immigration, July 1999

"So what's the new strategy. It's a bright, flashing sign that says to potential illegal aliens: Come to the United States, once you make it past the Border Patrol, you are home free."

The following is from the Christian Science Monitor of April 7, 1995:

Navarro's rally was for a piece of America, not peace at the border.

''Ours is a chauvinist country, where you were brought up with the idea that you are Mexican always, that you could never be something else,'' says Francisco Javier Guerrero, a researcher at the Center for Chicano and Border Studies here.

Today we are gathered to protest an attempt to disarm the Border Patrol. But we are protesting more than this. We are protesting the wholesale invasion of the United States by a hostile nation, an invasion that can only lead to civil war and widespread bloodshed in America. We are protesting NAFTA that has only brought misery to the Mexican people and an environmental disaster to the border.

We are at a crossroads. We can chose to continue a policy of providing a safety valve for Mexico, a safety valve that opens onto a deadly desert, or we can enforce our immigration laws with vigor and save lives and our nation.

We the citizens of this great nation have a right and a duty to demand that our elected officials uphold the constitution and put and end this invasion. The United States of America is unique in the history of the world and, to our knowledge, in the universe, and must not be put at risk. There is not the stuff to make another.

And to the Border Patrol, let me repeat the words of General Douglas MacArthur as he bade farewell to the Corps of Cadets at West Point:

"The long gray line has never failed us. Were you to do so, a million ghosts in olive drab, in brown khaki, in blue and gray, would rise from their white crosses, thundering those magic words: duty, honor, country."

Thank you,

Glenn Spencer
