Spencer had second thoughts

July 31, 2008

After speaking to the Arizona Daily Star reporter the first time, I called him back and said had second thoughts about the self-deportation plan. I said in a way it was a sort of amnesty. After all, if an alien enters the program he or she has 90 days during which they are free to stay in the country. I asked what is to stop the government from extending that deadline? Also, the volunteer deportee must be given some sort of document that can be used to avoid instant deportation. I wondered if it could be forged. Also, what penalty would thee be if the volunteer decided not to show up for deportation? If there is none, why not sign up, get a free 90-day pass and skip out again? In other words, there are potential problems -- as usual.
