JAMIEL'S LAW: A MOTION AND A DEBATE CHALLENGE

1. ZINE TAKING ACTION

Council Member Zine has announced he will take the steps necessary to propose a change to L.A.'s "sanctuary city" policy for gang members.

Unfortunately, his proposed amendment is NOT Jamiel's Law, but is instead a "watered down" version. Still, this is a huge and positive development. Tonight on the Kevin James Show (KRLA AM 870), Zine said he would announce in advance the dates of any public hearings. Thank you, Council Member Zine.

2. MOORE CHALLENGES VILLARAIGOSA TO DEBATE

I am challenging Mayor Villaraigosa to debate Jamiel's Law with me, on May 1, 2008. I want a Lincoln-Douglas style debate: a 10-minute opening argument from each of us; three or five minutes of cross- examination; and five-minute closing statements, followed by question- and-answers from the public and press. Let's have a REAL debate, and let the public hear from the Mayor why gang members deserve "sanctuary city" protection.
