Please join the Shaw family and me at noon
this Saturday, May 10 for a ceremony to dedicate the plaque
commemorating Jamiel Shaw, II's life. The location is at 21st and Fifth
Avenue, Los Angeles, 90018.
Two months have passed since Jamiel's murder. Over a month has passed since
I first proposed Jamiel's Law. Villaraigosa and the City Council, however,
continue to make our city a "sanctuary city" for gang members. This city's
official policy is to wait until AFTER an illegal alien gang member gets caught
murdering one of our children, or committing some other crime, before lifting a
finger to deport him.
We're going to change that policy ourselves. By the time of Saturday's
ceremony, we will have submitted the necessary papers to the City to start the
process to put Jamiel's Law on the ballot in the March 2009 election. We should
have the petitions approved and ready for signatures within a month. After that,
we will have 120 days to get about 74,000 signatures from registered voters who
live in L.A. Judging from the enthusiastic turnout at our May Day forum, that
will not be a problem.
Let's fill up the street with supporters on Saturday. I'll see you there.
