Former Congressman Tom Tancredo released the following statement regarding the Sept. 23
Denver Post story on Bill Owens assistance to an illegal alien in 2002"Bill Owens should utter the words that stick in the throat of all egotistical politicians - 'I am sorry.' He won't, of course.
"I am disappointed that Gov. Owens had so little respect for our state and federal laws barring in-state tuition to illegal aliens that he felt compelled to help circumvent the law through private donations.
"Few people reading this newspaper story will remember that Apodaca’s 'predicament' was featured on the front page of the Denver Post. Fewer still will recall that the Denver Post editors later admitted that they were guided to the story by the Mexican Consulate, which had been lobbying the state legislature for months to change the law on this matter. Thus, the unwritten story here is that the Denver Post, the Mexican Consulate, and --- now we learn, the Governor of the state --- conspired to use Mr. Apodaca to generate public agitation against our laws on in-state tuition.
Fortunately, the people of Colorado and the US Congress have resisted those changes and in-state tuition for illegal aliens is still prohibited."
