LATINO MARCH ON WASHINGTON
Saturday October 12, 1996
The "March" started at 11:00 a.m. and proceeded south on 16th street towards the White House. Plenty of District of Columbia police officers in motorcycles and squad cars cleared the march route of traffic.
The "March" was led by an arm of the Mexican Army, the Drum an Bugle Corps of the Municipio de Tijuana and a contingent of Brown Berets.. It was truly surreal to see all those Mexican Flags and the well disciplined Mexican Drum and Bugle Corps marching in cadence to the drums and bugles with tens of thosuands of Latinos following and heading towards the White House.
We do not believe that a Hollywood film could do this event justice. At one point near the White House where the "March" had to make a right turn there stood 12 armed mounted policeman at the guard to make sure that the marchers did not choose to go straight to the White House. It was like a scene from the film "The Alamo".

Absent were many of our major mainstream Latino organizations and our elected Latino representatives. We were hoping that at least one of our four Latino congressional representives from Los Angeles County would be present but none showed up. The only elected Latino from California that was there as far as we know was Antonio Villaraigosa, a state representative from Los Angeles.
"Somos Mexicanos!" We are Mexicans!!Villaraigosa, a leading Reconquista, is now Speaker of the California Assembly.
ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA AT MARCHA LIBERTAD, WASHINGTON, D.C., OCTOBER 12, 1996 Surrounded by Mexican flags, Antonio Villaraigosa said united Latinos and Mexicanos would join to fight those who passed Propositions 187 and 209 and an immigration law which he said, "turns the Constitution on its head."
March demanded amnesty for illegal aliens and voting rights for non-citizens. Villaraigosa was the only L.A. Latino politican who would appear at the rally.
