Re: Bits of History Suggest Utah Is Location of Mythic Aztlan

Editor (Salt Lake Tribune):

The search for the mythical Aztec nation of Aztlan is reminscent of Nazi "archaeologists" digging holes throughout Germany to find proof of Aryan supremacy -- it is faux-science with a political agenda ("Bits of History Suggest Utah Is Location of Mythic Aztlan").

While Himmler's flunkies used some some faked artifacts to demonstrate the historic superiority of the white race and therefore the veracity of Nazi ideology, today's intellectual descendents in search of Aztlan pursue an equally dubious self-serving mythology.

Central to the Aztlaneers is the idea that the American southwest belongs to Mexico, and Mexican children are taught in school that they should retrieve those stolen lands. Many Chicanos openly say that Mexican immigration is demographic warfare to accomplish that goal. How convenient that Utah is far to the north of Mexico.

It is a curious choice for today's Chicanos to idolize the Aztecs -- one of the most brutal groups even to inhabit the earth. The tribe was so cruel to its neighbors that they were happy to aid the Spanish conquerors. Had the Aztecs not ripped out thousands of beating hearts on sacrificial platforms from these same local people, surely the tribes of central Mexico could have joined together to repel the invader.

In any case, it is rather shocking that a reputable newspaper would give so much serious attention to a subject in the same league as little green men from Mars.
