NEW YORK'S CRISIS HARD TO COMPREHEND (FOR SOME)
Originally published in the May 11, 2003 issue of the Alamance Independent
Can you believe? Is it really true? "New York City stands on the brink of Lindsayesque catastrophe," or so the Wall Street Journal says (see [1]). That must have been shocking news for all those who keep repeating their multicultural mantra that "diversity is our strength". The city has reached historically unprecedented levels of diversity so it must have been stronger than ever.
Horse feathers.
For years we have been fed with Orwellian bull of this kind. That diversity is strength. That multiculturalism is the best thing that ever happened to the American society. That poor (and mostly illegal) aliens from Third-World countries are the major driving force of American prosperity. And that implementation of the neo-Socialist ideas of Left-leaning liberals, like, for instance, taxing the "rich" and giving away to the poor (pouring in millions through American porous border) will greatly enhance everyone's standard of living.
I would understand the New York's fiscal insolvency if it were a result of an over-investing in the city's functional infrastructure and pedantic maintenance. Clean, smooth, drivable, and safe streets, virtually non-existing crime, inviting and well maintained public facilities, plenty of convenient parking space, well planned urban architecture, marginal noise and pollution, and flawlessly functioning transportation system would certainly explain why the New York's administration has managed to get into the red area. I would even absolve them from creating the budget crisis if they eradicated poverty from the city. At least something of consequence would have been accomplished. Unfortunately, not much, if anything, of the above can be seen in New York. The city is not only broke. It's dysfunctional.
There were people who were warning for years that city's Robin-Hoodean system of heavily subsidized public services paired with a geometric increase of poor, uneducated, culturally alien and not even English speaking population must eventually empty the city coffers of whatever was left there, and bring the town to its knees. These warnings were logically sound and appealing to intuition of a reasonable person. Unfortunately, the leaders of political Left, which, despite Republican majors, controlled both the city and the minds of their constituencies, were living in a state of denial and acted as it they were trying to change the reality with fiction of the sort "diversity is strength". Their totally irrational approach to mass and mostly illegal immigration (remember Sen. Edward Kennedy's arrogant statement "[] our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually [...], the present level of immigration remains substantially the same [...], the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset []" after the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act was passed?) only exacerbated the existing problems and made parts of the city about as manageable as Calcutta, or the Tower of Babel, I should say.
There is a lesson to learn for all of us from the New York's catastrophic state of affairs. The unproved ideas that look good on a paper should probably stay where they are (on the paper, that is). When the liberals tell us that something is good for America then they, probably, just say so. The failed utopian system they try to impose on us not only has no supporting evidence in facts, but is outright incompatible with the reality. So, if you wonder whether diversity is strength, or mass Third-World immigration makes the economy boom, or whether taxing the "rich" and giving away to the millions of poor aliens eradicates poverty, just look at what's happening in New York now. It will, most likely, happen to your community should you accept the politically correct nonsense that the advocates of multiculturalism and their liberal "main stream" media are trying to sell.
