Citizenship Matters
Georgia Legislative Alert
March 18, 2004
Just like last session when Sam Zamarripa tried to sneakily attach a driver' s licenses for illegals law as a hidden amendment to a bill, he's up to the same tricks this year as the Legislature faced a mountain of proposed legislation on its cross-over day yesterday.
$600 MILLION is a lot of money to Georgia taxpayers called upon to pay it. And it's an estimate of what illegal aliens cost taxpayers in Georgia just for EDUCATION and MEDICAID in one year.
No one really knows for sure - the specific issue has never been thoroughly investigated before. So, Senator Casey Cagle of Gainesville wants to do just that by taking an honest, hard look at the matter.
But Democrat Sam Zamarippa is up to his old tricks again as he gutted Cagle' s Resolution (SR 827) to set a Study Committee with a devious amendment yesterday.
Only one Democrat, Hugh Gillis of Soperton, voted against the Zamarippa amendment which gives professional pro-illegal advocates from the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Mexican-American Business Chamber permanent seats and votes on the study committee.
That's like appointing foxes to stand guard at the hen house.
Supporting Zamarippa were several prominent Republicans including Senate President Pro Tem Eric Johnson, the Governor's floor leader Bill Stephens, and sixth district Congressional candidate Chuck Clay.
Republicans joining Sen. Cagle in opposition to the Zamarippa amendment were Senators Don Balfour, 6th district Congressional candidates Tom Price and Bob LaMutt, Renee Untermann, David Shafer, Chuck Moody, Jeff Mullis, Don Cheeks, Bill Hamrick, Preston Smith, Ralph Hudgens, and Don Thomas.
Please thank these good folks who supported Casey Cagle.

Senator Cagle has tabled the resolution as amended by Zamarippa. Ask the State Senators to vote for SR 827 when Senator Cagle brings it up for a vote without the Zamarripa amendment.
Elizabeth Cole of Eagle Forum suggests making these very important points.
- · SR 827 is a Study Committee on the fiscal impact of ILLEGAL immigration on Georgia's Medicaid and education systems.
- · Efforts like SR 827 are just plain common sense. We need to know how much the illegal immigration is costing the honest, hardworking TAXPAYERS of Georgia.
- · Why side up with open advocates of illegal immigration to destroy the Study Committee by filling it up with other avowed SUPPORTERS of illegal immigration?
- · Georgia needs a Study Committee to assess accurate information. We need the decision makers, Senators, to be on it, NOT the radical interest groups whose role should be limited like all other sides to testimony.
- · The Zamarippa Amendment was a clear attempt by Pro-ILLEGAL supporters to gut SR 827.
- · A Republican majority means absolutely nothing if we cannot count on good Republicans to stand up for conservative principles - like honest policy making and following the law.
