Californians for Population Stabilization Mourns the Loss of Writer and Activist, Dr. B. Meredith Burke

All of us at CAPS feel the tragic loss on December 11th of one of our most distinguished and insightful writers and activists: Dr. B. Meredith Burke. We were privileged to have Dr. Burke as a Senior Writing Fellow, producing columns and opinion pieces about California demographics and its connection to economics, social, population and immigration policy.

COMMENTARY

Stop Population -- and Immigration -- Growth

By B. MEREDITH BURKE

August 7 2001

Californians are aware that population growth undermines their once golden environment. In a survey last May, 76% of respondents told the Public Policy Institute of California that they felt the state's rapid population growth was contributing "a lot" or "some" to the state's electricity shortage. The same could be said of water shortages, traffic congestion and the housing shortage.

I add my voice to those who mourn the passing of Dr. B. Meredith Burke. Meredith, a professional demographer, spent the last twelve years tying to warn America about the looming demographic disaster which is now visiting California. She was a prolific writer and researcher, having been published in many leading newspapers and magazines

I began my work with Meredith in 1992 when we taped a segment for "48 hrs" at a meeting of Voice of Citizens Together in Studio City. Over the next ten years I did much of her computational and computer graphics work, including an analysis of California birth records.

As we mourn Meredith's passing, let us find the energy to pick up her shield and sword and fight on.
