12/17/02 -- Some of us in Colorado held a prayer vigil for Meredith Burke tonight, and we invite others to join us in marking the passing of this amazing woman. May her tireless spirit be given the rest, peace and comfort she so deserves. Meredith, you will be missed. --Terry
12/17/02 -- Glenn, here's some comments of Meredith Burke that I never forgot."There's no greening of hate for society to decide what size cities and what ratio of population to wilderness, recreation land, and farm land accord best with its lifestyle values? Would the world not benefit from reining in the population of the most resource-devouring nation? Is it inappropriate for citizens in a democracy to hold their politicians environmentally accountable? I invite the "Greening of Hate" authors to tell me how we can avoid cities of ten, twenty, and thirty millions. Or why we should passively accept cities of a size considered undesirable by a majority of us. Or how we can enjoy uncrowded beaches and national wildernesses; and how we can protect the scant few percent remaining of our original wetlands and wildlife refuges as the U.S. population spirals towards the one billion mark in the 22nd century. More importantly, I invite them to tell me why we should accept the world they are foisting upon us, and why we should accept the findings of eco psychologists and sundry spiritualists that a natural environment is psychologically less healthier and less conducive to creativity and peacekeeping than a dense urban setting that stretches on endlessly."
I sometimes use these comments while explaining the follies of mass/illegal immigration.

12/17/02 -- Glenn,I am so sad to learn of the loss of Meredith. She was tireless immigration reformer whom I often described as a bulldog. Several years ago Meredith and I were debate partners at a two day conference for National Council of Christians and Jews in Monterey. Our opponents were Ron Unz, and a Hispanic college professor who advocated open borders. On the first day of the conference Meredith and I debated the broad spectrum of facts about immigration from the culture to the environment. Meredith was like a bulldog because she latched on with facts and would never let go.
By the end of the first day Unz fled, as our arguments were clearly carrying the debate.
I have often thought of that debate, with Meredith skewering our opposition's emotional arguments with facts, time after time. I will miss her.
