Gang
killing spree in the S.F. Valley
With a midsummer surge in street violence,
more than half of all slayings in the San Fernando Valley as
well as citywide are linked to gang activity, police said Wednesday.
Authorities say nearly 59 percent of the Valley's 68 killings
this year and 52 percent of the 365 slayings throughout Los Angeles
are gang-related. -- Los Angeles police have been put on overtime
to solve a rash of recent slayings, hitting the streets hard
with gang cops, extra patrols and a task force of traffic cops.
