Mexican nationals will soon be able to use consular identification cards issued by the Mexican government as a valid form of ID in San Diego County.
The San Diego County Police Chiefs and Sheriff's Association voted last week to accept the Mexican ID cards when no other form of identification is available.
Oceanside Police Chief Mike Poehlman said he supports the idea.
"Many times we are faced with trying to come up with an identification for someone and trying to verify who someone is," Poehlman said Monday. "We obviously have to be very careful in making sure that when someone says they're Joe Smith, that they are really Joe Smith."
The association will issue a countywide policy next month that will be used to train police officers, Poehlman said.
