Gutierrez
Says Congress Must Revise Immigration Policy
Despite rapid growth in the nation's Hispanic
population, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., said Hispanics will
not exert proportional political influence until Congress revises
immigration policy to allow undocumented residents [a
bunch of illegals] to legalize their status [extort Americans]
- a point Gutierrez plans to press when the Congressional Hispanic
Caucus meets with President Bush Monday. "I think you need
to continue to help people going from residents
to citizens," Gutierrez said in a wide-ranging interview
with Congress Daily Thursday. As chairman of the Hispanic Caucus'
immigration task force, Gutierrez introduced an immigration amnesty
bill last month that would allow anyone residing in the United
States for five years to seek permanent resident status, the
first step toward citizenship.
