'Mexico Doesn't Recognize Double Citizenship'
In regard to the paid advertisement published by the Voice of Citizens Together in the Daily News issue of May 7, under the heading of "Proposition 187 was the last gasp of White Americans in California," the Consulate General of Mexico states the following:
The government of Mexico does not plan to grant double citizenship to Mexican nationals residing in the United States.
The Mexican government has made perfectly clear through appropriate channels that it does not recognize double citizenship.
Mexican political parties represented at the Mexican Congress have agreed on examining a proposed legislation that, in case it should become law, would allow the preservation of the Mexican nationality for those deciding the adoption of the American citizenship. Those persons would then keep the rights inherent to the Mexican nationality, among them economic ones.
The issue of double citizenship has been raised for many years and has no relation at all to Proposition 187.
The Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles would like to emphasize the existence of a cordial and respectful bilateral relationship, beneficial for both countries in the vast majority of issues, among two nations like Mexico and the United States, that share a 2,000 mile-long border.
