Our wonderful DMV

I just received a notice from the California Department of Motor Vehicles that my social security number doesn't match what the Social Security Administration has on file. This happened because someone at the DMV miskeyed the SSN in their computer, putting me in the position of having to straighten it out. What is astounding to me is that the DMV is checking these things so closely in my case, but there are hundreds of people on one social security number and these people have driver's licenses. Is the DMV selectively checking on people, because otherwise, I don't see how they could allow the massive numbers of people who are not citizens to obtain a California driver's license.
