Immigration moratoriumThis item was posted in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota Argus Leader on December 19, 2008
As an immigrant who used to prepare amnesty and other immigration applications, I wish to respond to President-elect Barack Obama's selection of Sen. Tom Daschle to be his health and human services secretary.
Daschle should be reminded that this nation cannot achieve fiscally responsible health care reform without also substantially reducing legal and illegal immigration. According to the March 2007 current population survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, 33.8 percent of all foreign-born Americans lack health insurance. Immigrants and their U.S.-born children under 18 account for almost one-third of all persons in the country without health insurance nationwide. Furthermore, more than 10 million Americans of diverse backgrounds, including legal immigrants, are now unemployed.
Daschle and other leaders truly concerned about the well-being of legal residents should urge Obama and Congress to enact some sort of immigration moratorium for the good of all Americans.
