July 10, 1999Laredo police and the local FBI agents have investigated some 50 reported sightings of alleged serial killer Rafael Resendez-Ramirez since news of his alleged murder spree began, officials said Friday. Most of the Laredo callers have claimed seeing Resendez in the area of south east Laredo near the TexMex railroad lines.
Assistant Police Chief Fructuoso San Miguel said Friday that in the last 48 hours, the police department had received four calls of possible Resendez sightings. "We sent units to investigate but all of them have turned out to be nothing. In all cases, the officers failed to locate anyone at all," he said.
Since law enforcement officers began looking for Resendez more than a month ago, the local FBI office has investigated some 50 possible sightings, but found nothing. The suspect remains on the FBI's Most Wanted list.
Resendez, who is suspected in at least eight homicides, has been the object of a nationwide manhunt. Five of those killings have taken place in Texas, officials said. In Austin a few weeks ago a freight train was stopped and checked after reports that Resendez was riding the train. A man was arrested, but turned out not to be the suspect.
Officers also arrested at least five other men who were riding train illegally. Meanwhile, San Miguel said the Laredo Police Department will continue investigating any and all reported sightings.
