Denouncing Tancredo insults readers
6/20/02
A personal attack with no discussion of issues is a dead giveaway that the writer is lacking a real argument. So it is with the article "Colorado politician on guard at Mexican border" that attempts to castigate open-borders opponent Rep. Tom Tancredo.
The piece is so keen to condemn that even the long-discredited Southern Poverty Law Center (known more for its bulging bank account than for any work against hate groups) is quoted in the litany.
More importantly, the views of Rep. Tancredo that illegal immigration must be stopped and open borders constitute a national security threat are the opinions of the American people. A recent Zogby poll found that 68 percent of Americans favored stationing the military on the border to control illegal immigration.
It is hardly anti-immigrant to insist that the procedure be a legal one. In fact, returning immigration to a lawful process and away from chaos honors those immigrants who respect our country enough to follow its laws.
In denouncing Rep. Tancredo, The Dallas Morning News shows how little it respects its readers. Furthermore, it is shameful to give such shallow consideration to an issue of critical importance to America's future.
