New York Times Is Wrong, Wilson Right on Illegal Immigrants
By John Gizzi
Human Events Online, September 11, 2009
. . .
As the furor continues over the cry of “You lie!” by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) during President Obama’s address on health care on Wednesday (September 9), the national media omits two important details: 1) that a non-partisan study earlier this year backed up Wilson’s conclusion hat the Obama health care measure (H.R. 3200) does, in fact, cover illegal immigrants, and 2) that Wilson was correct when he told HUMAN EVENTS a day after his outburst that Republican attempts to amend the measure to deny benefits for illegal immigrants were thwarted in two key House committees.

Joe Wilson's Victory on Illegal Immigration
By Tom Tancredo
Townhall.com, September 16, 2009
. . .
Illegal immigration already costs billions to our system. The Federation for American Immigration Reform recently released a report that the cost of reimbursing hospitals for care of illegal aliens alone costs 10.5 billion dollars a year. Another study by the Center for Immigration Studies estimated the cost of including illegals in Obamacare at 30.5 billion dollars.
Turning illegal aliens into legal residents does not change these costs.

Our Borders 8 Years Later
By Janice Kephart
CIS Immigration Blog, September 11, 2009
. . .
After the 9/11 Commission Final Report and our Terrorist Travel monograph were published in July and August 2004, and the 9/11 National Intelligence Reform Act was passed in December 2004, it became clear that the lessons of 9/11 on the border could not go fallow. The responsibility to enable change to make us safer as a nation and as individuals lived far beyond our publication date. Things started to get done, slowly with education that turned to policy that became laws requiring the federal government, after decades of failure, to make our borders and our interior more secure.
So where are we know? Are we safer than we were on 9/11 in terms of our borders? Yes, we are. At least for now. We use biometrics to screen people at our borders and require all persons coming into our country now to present a passport. We are improving infrastructure on the border too. We have registered-traveler systems that work. We now require foreign visitors from countries that do not require a visa to fill out basic travel forms before they even get to their foreign airport for departure to the U.S. that are vetted against criminal and terror watchlists, replacing the old system which couldn't tell whether a terrorist was on board until in flight or, worse yet, at our border. We have fencing on the southwest border that is saving the environment from illegal trashing and protecting communities better from crime and drug trafficking, even if much much more needs to be done. We have E-Verify, that easily enables employers to determine work authorization of new hires and nearly all states have improved
security in the issuance of driver's licenses. We have a program that enables local law enforcement to garner immigration status of criminals called 287(g). We are trying to assure that our ports have more secure workers and incoming cargo.

Illegal? No Problem!
ACORN's home-loan racket
By Michelle Malkin
The New York Post, September 18, 2009
There's one thing more shocking than the illegal- alien smuggling advice that an ACORN official in San Diego gave undercover journalists James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles: It's the illegal-alien home-loan racket that ACORN has been operating with the full knowledge of the US government.
On Wednesday, O'Keefe and Giles published the fifth in a series of BigGovernment.com sting videos. In it, ACORN official Juan Carlos Vera coached the pimp-and-prostitute-posing pair on how best to pull off a border-busting smuggling operation.
It would be 'better from Tijuana,' Vera counseled. He then generously offered the investigative couple his Mexican 'contacts' to bring 12 illegal-alien girls into the country for prostitution.

Jorge Ramos, Disappointed in Obama, Lines Up Sunday Interview
By Jerry Kammer
CIS Immigration Blog, September 18, 2009
. . .
It's a good bet that for Sunday's interview, Ramos will revisit the interview he taped in May of last year and has repeated numerous times since then with then-candidate Obama. As they spoke of immigration, Obama pledged that during his first year as president a reform bill would be drafted 'that I strongly support and that we will move forward as soon as we can.' The White House is working with Congress and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to meet that self-imposed deadline of next January 21.

The Coarsening of Our Political Dialogue
By Jerry Kammer
CIS Immigration Blog, September 16, 2009
. . .
The event was organized by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which said in a press release that 47 radio hosts from around the country were assembling 'to remind Congress and the new administration that rampant illegal immigration, efforts to grant amnesty, and taxpayer subsidized health care benefits to millions of law-breakers are hot button issues for the American public.'
That point of view, while controversial, certainly is entitled to public discussion. And Lourdes Meluza, Univision's talented Washington correspondent, offered two participants -- Spanish speakers Edd Hendee of KSEV in Houston and FAIR's Jack Martin -- brief sound bites to present their concerns. It would be good journalism if Univision would actually send reporters into the field to examine how those concerns affect communities across the country. But the network almost always holds to a narrow story line that conforms to anchorman Jorge Ramos's belief that these concerns are manifestations of racism. Opposing views are generally reduced to soundbites.

Now That I Have Your Attention on Health Reform and Illegals
By James R. Edwards Jr.
CIS Immigration Blog, September 14, 2009
. . .
Most of the news media have worked overtime to deny that health reform legislation covers illegal aliens (it most definitely does). But there are a few exceptions — thank God! One is the Courier out in Iowa. The Waterloo, Iowa, news people actually looked at the bill, H.R. 3200. The editorial also gets that House lawmakers took the cynical approach of using meaningless, fig leaf 'prohibitions,' wink-and-nod presumption of eligibility, and omission of parallel verification requirements contained in 71 other public programs.
The sunshine that's focused intensely on the gaping legislative loopholes has forced the White House to stake a firmer position (though still just rhetoric and lacking any power to bind Congress).

Does He Lie?
By Charles Krauthammer
Human Events Online, September 18, 2009
. . .
And then there's the famous contretemps about health insurance for illegal immigrants. Obama said they would not be insured. Well, all four committee-passed bills in Congress allow illegal immigrants to take part in the proposed Health Insurance Exchange.
But more importantly, the problem is that laws are not self-enforcing. If they were, we'd have no illegal immigrants because, as I understand it, it's illegal to enter the United States illegally. We have laws against burglary, too. But we also provide for cops and jails on the assumption that most burglars don't voluntarily turn themselves in.
When Republicans proposed requiring proof of citizenship, the Democrats twice voted that down in committee. Indeed, after Rep. Joe Wilson's 'You lie!' shout-out, the Senate Finance Committee revisited the language of its bill to prevent illegal immigrants from getting any federal benefits. Why would the Finance Committee fix a nonexistent problem?

Legal Immigrants and 'Anchor Babies' Weigh Down Obamacare
By Virgil Goode
Townhall.com, September 14, 2009
. . .
Plenty of analysts and commentators have exposed how illegal aliens will receive healthcare under Obamacare. They point out that while the bill claims to prohibit illegal aliens from receiving benefits, the Democrats repeatedly blocked Amendments that would screen for legal status. Steve Camorata of the non-partisan Center for Immigration Studies recently estimated that 6.6 million illegal aliens will be eligible for public healthcare.

Immigration Reform Finally Comes to Saipan
By David North
CIS Immigration Blog, September 17, 2009
The very worst sliver of America's immigration policy, one that brought both worker exploitation and a population explosion to an outlying set of U.S.-controlled islands, comes to an end on November 28 after more than a decade of controversy.
For years investigative reporters and television crews descended on Saipan, an island just north of Guam in the North Pacific, to document the grim living conditions and the miserable wages paid to temporary garment workers from China and the Philippines – a situation that persisted because the island government made its own immigration policy and U.S. laws did not apply.

Liberal Lies About Health Care: Joe Wilson Edition!
By Ann Coulter
Newsmax.com, September 16, 2009
. . .
I'm trying to get to the next installment of my Pulitzer Prize-deserving series on liberal lies about national health care, but apparently liberals have decided to torture us by neurotically fixating on one lie.
After President Barack Obama gave a speech to a joint session of Congress last week passionately defending his national health-care plan, the Democrats were agog at the brilliance of the speech. Nancy Pelosi was so thrilled, her expression almost changed.
But as Obama ticked off one demonstrably false claim after another – eliciting 37 standing ovations from the Democrats in the audience – America's greatest living statesman, Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., yelled out, 'You lie!' in response to Obama's claim that the bill will not cover illegal aliens.
There are a number of theories about why America's greatest living statesman shouted 'You lie!' at that juncture, but mine is that Wilson said it because Obama told a big, fat, stinking lie.
Every single American knows it's a lie. But liberals take pleasure in repeating it – and then condescendingly accusing anyone who doesn't accept their lie of being a toothless, illiterate racist.
Our politicians, media and courts have done everything they can to encourage illegal immigration, including obstinately refusing to enforce the border. While illegals streaming across the border generally aren't prosecuted, U.S. border patrol agents who naively try to guard the border often are.
Wise (and pregnant) Latinas dash across the border just in time to give birth at American hospitals – medical services paid for by U.S. taxpayers – gaining instant citizenship for their children, thereby entitling them to the entire Chinese menu of American welfare programs.
In 2004, 42.6 percent of all babies born at taxpayer expense in California were born to illegal aliens, according to a state report on Medi-Cal-funded deliveries. In hospitals close to the Mexican border, the figure is closer to 80 percent. Remember: This is before health care becomes 'free' to every U.S. resident.

GOP Should Stick to Values in the Immigration Debate
By Rep. Lamar Smith
The Hill, September 16, 2009
. . .
Some people say that Republicans have made mistakes when it comes to Hispanic voters. They point out that Hispanics are a growing part of the population, and assert that GOP opposition to amnesty for illegal immigrants is driving Hispanics away.
The talking point has been commonly used to dismiss Republican views in major policy debates, including most recently the GOP concerns about how illegal immigrants benefit from the House health care bill.
Most of the people who make these claims are Democrats. And they are right – Republicans do need to change some things to win the Hispanic vote. But our position on amnesty is not one of them.
A false choice is often presented to Republicans: support amnesty or offend Hispanic voters.
But support for amnesty is not a panacea for GOP appeal to Hispanics and opposition is not a vote-loser. In the 1986 election, for example, after a Republican president signed into law the largest amnesty for illegal aliens in American history, only 23% of Hispanics voted for Republican candidates.

Obama Risks Losing Congressional Hispanic Caucus Support
By Ronald W. Mortensen
CIS Immigration Blog, September 14,2009
. . .
In an effort to prove Congressman Wilson wrong, both the White House and Senate Finance Committee moved quickly in the days following the speech to assure Americans that illegal aliens will be excluded from all elements of health insurance reform and that there will be verification provisions in any bill coming from the Senate and signed by the President.
The Hispanic Caucus, the National Council of La Raza, and the House Democrats are likely reeling at what has happened. After all, they had accepted the meaningless, limited prohibitions on illegal alien participation in health insurance programs in the House bill as long as there were no verification or enforcement provisions because this would have allowed the 75% of illegal aliens who have fraudulent Social Security numbers to use them to unlawfully obtain health insurance just as they currently use them to unlawfully obtain employment.

Was Joe Wilson Right?
By Andrew Napolitano
FOXNews.com, September 18, 2009
. . .
In the late 1970s, the State of Texas enacted legislation that denied a public school education to the children of illegal immigrants and denied state aid to municipalities that attempted to educate those children. Many illegal immigrants filed suit and all of the cases made their way to the Supreme Court. In a landmark ruling, that most lawyers know about, and that every professor of constitutional law knows about, called Plyler vs. Doe (1982), the Court ordered Texas to make the same education available to illegal immigrants as it does to citizens. In so doing, the Court held that: (a) the Constitution protects “persons” ; and (b) “persons” are citizens as well as strangers, people born here and people who end up here, people here lawfully and people here unlawfully; and (c) in the area of social services, whatever benefits the government makes available to the general public cannot be kept away from a class of persons based on their immigration status or that of their parents.
It is because of this ruling that Proposition 187 in California, which attempted to do via a referendum what Texas attempted to do via legislation, was invalidated. It is clear from the broad language in the Plyler case that providing an education is in the same class of social benefits as providing health care.
Now, back to Congressman Wilson and President Obama. Can anyone really suggest that the Harvard Law School-educated University of Chicago-employed professor of constitutional law did NOT know the law when he contended that the Congress can keep universal health care away from illegals? He must have known that, short of amending the Constitution to re-define “persons” and “Equal Protection”, whatever the Congress makes available by way of social services to the general population, it must make available to all persons.
There is no question that under the present law, Congress simply cannot pick and choose which “persons” to whom it will afford social benefits and to which “persons” it will not. How could the president not have known that?

Turnabout Not Fair Play—Gringos Don’t Get Free Medical Care In Mexico
By Allan Wall
VDare.com, September 13, 2009
. . .
As for foreigners who come to Mexico for the primary purpose of receiving medical treatment (as some do), legally, they must be charged at the full rate, except in cases of emergency. [A los extranjeros que ingresen al país con el propósito predominante de hacer uso de los servicios de salud, se cobrará íntegramente el costo de los mismos, excepto en los casos de urgencias.]
Nevertheless, most Americans who visit Mexico aren’t poor. As for Americans residing in Mexico, they are generally either gainfully employed or financially independent (because that’s how the Mexican government wants it). So there’s not a big run on hospitals by poor Americans. Nor will there be, I think, because the Mexican government wouldn’t allow it.
Bottom line: there is no effort in Mexico to reciprocate the care afforded to Mexicans in the U.S. by providing free care to Americans in Mexico. And there isn’t going to be.

No Free Health Care Bill for Illegal Aliens
By J. Grant Swank, Jr.
MichNews.com, September 11, 2009
. . .
What Obama wants is free health care for illegals. That is not stated outright but it is implied for it is not stated otherwise. Illegal aliens, if Obama’s plan gets passed, will get without-cost health care coverage without question.
This will open wide the American borders doors for more illegals to swamp the country. Why should they not?
They think, not like the hysteriacs who put Obama into the White House.
They think. They take advantage of the socialized base that Obama wants for America.
They think. They win. They get free care and the rest of us wonder how our country was robbed from us in the President’s first year on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Mud Slinging Now The Only Weapon Left For The Open Border Crowd

Let's have a real debate. Health care reform of course should not mean tax dollars to illegal aliens. Saying that is reasonable, although it is frankly being used by the opposition to call Dr. Tanton and other real reformers 'racists'. Without (Patriotic) Immigration Reform, All Reforms Are Imperiled—Including Health Care
By Donald A. Collins
VDARE.com, September 16, 2009
. . .
But most important in this Wilson attack is its inadvertent highlighting of what must happen if any of the problems that America faces are to be addressed and solved.
We MUST solve the immigration problem. No health reform bill can cost less if we keep importing unneeded aliens, both legally and illegally, at this present rate of well over a million a year.
And how we can deal, in any health reform package, with the 11 or 12 million now here illegally remains a true conundrum.

Obama Lied: He Supports Health Care for Unlawful Immigrants
By Frosty Wooldridge
NewsWithViews.com, September 14, 2009
. . .
When Obama spoke the lie, he knew that any verification of ID had been deleted out of the bill. His fellow Democrats killed the amendment that would have required authentication of citizenship.
As Obama uttered the lie, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) could not stand it any longer. He shouted from the seats, “You lie!” He spoke for Americans that don’t appreciate the ‘lie’ Congress foists upon all citizen taxpayers. The truth: Congress made sure that no ID verification would allow any unlawful immigrant to utilize full, free healthcare without having paid a dime into it.
“Thank goodness Joe had the courage to call the President out on it!” said former congressman Tom Tancredo. “Illegal immigrants are definitely getting health insurance under the President's plan. There is no question about it! Joe and other Republicans tried to get the Democrats to agree to an amendment to the health care bill which would have specifically required the government to verify the legal status of anyone receiving benefits under the plan and Democrats voted 'NO' and killed it!”

Newsweek: Wrong on Immigration, Wrong on Health Care
National Review Institute, September 14, 2009
. . .
Things get only a little better when Romano’s argument finishes setting the stage and moves on to the main event. He writes, “As it is now, undocumented workers (and others) who can’t pay their way receive free emergency and charitable care—a service that costs those of us with health insurance an additional $1,000 per year, as Obama noted.” Factcheck.org reports that Obama’s figure comes from a left-wing advocacy group, and adds, “The figure is not supported by the Kaiser Family Foundation or the Congressional Budget Office. Both have reported that uncompensated care actually leads to lower hospital profits, not higher premiums. KFF’s estimate of the amount of uncompensated care shifted to premium-payers works out to about $200 per family per year, not $1,000.”

Health Care Bill Carries Loopholes
The Courier (Waterloo, IA), September 14, 2009
. . .
Perhaps the greatest potential loophole can be seen on page 133 of the bill. A provision there states that if one member of a family is afforded coverage, all family members would have coverage. Having one child born in the United States could be a health care boon to a family residing in the country illegally.
Since a birth certificate issued by a U.S. state or territorial government is evidence of citizenship, and is generally accepted as proof of citizenship, it opens another door.
That’s not only a potential loophole, it’s another understandable reason why immigrants would risk illegal entry into the United States.

Will Obama’s “Stealth Amnesty” Provoke His Impeachment?
By Joe Guzzardi
VDare.com, September 11, 2009
. . .
Obama has promoted illegal immigration by including illegals in Obamacare and promising “comprehensive immigration reform”—Obamnesty—at every opportunity
And there are ominous signs that he is quietly sabotaging enforcement.
VDARE.COM’s Peter Gadiel called for George W. Bush’s impeachment because of his abandonment of enforcement and his advocacy of amnesty.
Recently, various conservative voices have sprung up recently endorsing Obama’s impeachment—most prominently the widely admired radio talk show host Michael Savage. (Listen to Savage demand Obama impeachment here.)
From a national security and economic stability perspective, the consequences of allowing more legal and illegal immigration are higher than ever. Not only does the terrorism threat remain unchecked but jobs are fewer and the economy shakier than at any time in American history.

National Hispanic Medical Association Says Health Care Status Quo For Aliens Is A 'Disgrace'! We Reply: You Bet It Is!'
By Joe Guzzardi
VDare.com, September 18, 2009
. . .
What it all boils down to is that the 'status quo' health care for aliens is a never ending bonanza of freebees all the way around. If you’re an uninsured illegal immigrant, your coverage includes everything from sniffles to liver transplants.
If you are, however a mere American citizen who can’t afford health insurance, too bad. Through your taxes, you will still pay well into the future for the medical tabs illegal aliens run up.
Rios knows this as well as you and I do.
But because Rios and her like-minded advocates are in a bad spot vis-à-vis Obamacare and their goal to have it include aliens, she’s pressured to say whatever she thinks the media will publish.

Illegal Immigrant Health Care
By Sarah Carlsruh
CampusReportOnline.net, September 14, 2009
. . .
Steven Camarota, Director of Research at the Center for Immigration Studies, states that “even though HR 3200 states that illegal immigrants are not eligible for the proposed taxpayer-funded affordable premium credits, there is nothing in the bill to enforce this.” SAVE, the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, is used by 71 federal programs to determine legal status. Although this program could have been used to prevent illegal immigrants from receiving taxpayer funding, the House Ways and Means Committee defeated a proposed amendment to require the use of SAVE to verify the legal status of those applying for public benefits.
The America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 (HR 3200) would provide affordability credits to assist low-income persons in the purchase of health care. In essence, affordability credits are a voucher given to help pay for private health insurance. The bills other health choice option would be to “enroll in a new government-run health insurance system that the bill would create,” or what is often referred to as the “public option.”

Immigration-Sanity With Democratic Help: Not An Impossible Dream
By Paul Nachman
VDare.com Blog, September 18, 2009
. . .
Anyway, environmentalists, like blacks, have essentially attached themselves to the Democrats, with the result that the Democrats take them for granted and the Republicans don’t even compete for their support. It’s not a winning strategy for accomplishing one’s goals (assuming one remembers what the goals are, which, as Walker suggests, the Sierra Club does not).
Patriotic immigration reformers are at hazard of making the same mistake by allying solely with Republicans and dissociating themselves from the Democrats. There’s history here, too. Congressman Anthony Beilenson, who represented the San Fernando Valley of suburban Los Angeles from 1977 to 1997, is a Democrat who spoke out forcefully on the many foreseeable hazards of mass immigration (legal and illegal both) while he was in Congress.

Is Deporting the Nations 13 Million Illegal Aliens Possible?
By William Busse
The Examiner (Maricopa County, AZ), September 14, 2009
. . .
Of course, everyone agrees that something must be done with the people who are here illegally. If amnesty is not going to be enacted, that essentially leaves two choices; do nothing and maintain the status quo, or begin deportation in earnest.
Liberals go convulsive at the mere mention of deportation, but I was wondering if it was actually practical. After consulting several authorities on the subject, I am convinced it is indeed a valid option, and the sooner the work begins, the sooner the problem will be solved.
Complete deportation could be achieved in the following ways

Calling Immigration System Broken is a Lie
By Emanuel Schweisberg
Seacoastonline.com (N.H.), September 15, 2009
. . .
It is wrong for President Obama to repeat the big lie that our immigration system is broken.
Since World War II, millions of legal immigrants have obeyed our immigration laws and became U.S. citizens. The Seacoast Sunday of July 5 had a front page story of how 192 legal immigrants from 48 countries became U.S. citizens at a naturalization ceremony at Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth. In addition, the Boston Sunday Globe of July 5 contained an article about how Vice President Joe Biden spent the holiday weekend in Iraq, where he witnessed 200 troops who were legal immigrants from 59 countries become U.S. citizens in a naturalization ceremony!
In each case, the legal immigrants worked hard to meet the requirements of our immigration laws to become U.S. citizens, proving that the system is not broken! On the contrary, our immigration system works fine, it is a big lie to call it broken. However, it could use some improvements to speed up the process; that's where President Obama should direct his efforts, not in a phony amnesty program that will cost billions of dollars we don't have.

How Illegals Could Obtain Health Insurance
By Don Irvine
Accuracy In Media, September 18, 2009
. . .
Obama and the Democrats are only concerned with whether or not illegal aliens have affordable health care to the extent that they can turn them into a loyal voting bloc in the future. If the Democrats felt that illegal aliens would vote for the GOP they wouldn't be a part of this debate.

When Millions Of Illegal Aliens Get Amnesty, They Will Be Eligible For Obamacare
By Brenda Walker
VDare.com Blog, September 17, 2009
. . .
Obama may be the first African-American President, but he has catered to Hispanics and done zero for black citizens as a whole. High unemployment in the latter community could be quickly alleviated by signing into law the SAVE Act, which would help remove the eight million illegal alien workers from US jobs. Which of course would open up employment for citizens of ALL races.

Latino Lawmaker Says Obama Should Give Obamacare To Illegals
By Brenda Walker
VDare.com Blog, September 16, 2009
. . .
I’ve been waiting for this shoe to drop, after Joe Wilson’s rude-but-true outburst at the President forced the White House and Congress to include citizenship verification in healthcare legislation. No surprise that the Energizer Bunny of illegal immigration Rep Luis Gutierrez is the guy squawking up a storm — he was the big cheese behind the obnoxious Amnesty Tour earlier this year that was filled with sob stories of families split by law enforcement.
President Obama was blasted by a top Latino ally on Monday for modifying his health-care plan in the face of conservative criticism.
The criticism was leveled in Spanish by Rep. Luis Gutierrez, a Democrat from Illinois who was the first Latino member of Congress to endorse Barack Obama for president.

Hispanic Caucus Helps to Prove Joe Wilson’s Accusation
By Ronald Williams
Blogger News Network, September 16th, 2009
Last week President Obama gave a speech to Congress. In it, he claimed that illegal immigrants would not be included in the healthcare reform bill, and that those who claim that they are were fear-mongering and being dishonest. Of course everyone knows now the infamous words from Joe Wilson, “You Lie!” An entire week goes by which sees Wilson getting punished for daring to call the President a liar.
The President, a week later, announces that he seeks to have the wording in the healthcare bill which would bar illegal immigrants from receiving healthcare under the new plan. Now, all of a sudden, the hispanic caucus is outraged, and are considering no longer supporting the bill.
Am I going crazy here, or does that pretty much say that, at least in the congressional hispanic caucus’ eye, the bill, as it stood before, would have provided healthcare for illegal immigrants? And if I further connect the dots, wouldn’t that, at least in the minds of the hispanic caucus, support that Joe Wilson was telling the truth, as it was spoken, on that date?

Sane Immigration Reform on Tap?
By Lee Hockstader
The Washington Post, September 13, 2009
. . .
The chances of building a sane immigration system seemed unlikely enough in 2007 before it was squashed by divisions among Democrats and a talk radio-fueled revolt on the right. If anything, they look even worse now, given the competing debates over health care and energy, a jobless rate edging toward 10 percent, and a plateau or decline in the number of illegal immigrants in the country.

Obama, Immigration and Health Care
By Ruben Navarrette
The Dallas Morning News, September 16, 2009
. . .
Trying to defuse the controversy, the White House overcorrected. White House spokesman Reid Cherlin recently said that the president's plan would bar illegal immigrants from purchasing health coverage through an insurance exchange and require verification of immigration status. Illegal immigrants could still purchase health insurance through the private market. Yet the White House acknowledges that private plans will probably shrink if a public option is created.
So illegal immigrants could end up with fewer health care options than they have now. And we call this reform?

When In Doubt, Blame the Illegals
By Mary Sanchez
The Kansas City Star, September 14, 2009
. . .
Wilson’s outburst was a red herring, and we should count on Republicans to inject their loathing of illegal immigrants into every reform measure taken up by the White House. But to give Wilson his due, millions of illegal immigrants will remain uninsured — and the rest of us will continue to bear some of the cost of the health care they receive. So how do we change that? Here’s a two-word answer, one that makes members of Congress quake in their loafers: immigration reform. If you think the town hall rowdies got out of hand decrying “death panels,” wait till Obama and Congress step up and try a much-needed overhaul of immigration policy.

'You Lie!' Yeller Rep. Joe Wilson Tells Truth About GOPers' Fringe
By Albor Ruis
The New York Daily News, September 13, 2009
. . .
'Congressman Joe Wilson's outburst is not only a massive breach of decorum,' said Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice, 'but the latest example of how race-baiting and immigrant bashing have become standard fare for hard-right elements of the Republican Party.'
One has to wonder if Wilson and his ilk are intent on committing political suicide - and in the process taking down with them the entire GOP - or if their prejudices are so deep that they just cannot help themselves.

Anti-Immigration Group FAIR Mars Smart Reform Push by Faith Groups
By Albor Ruiz
The New York Daily News, September 17, 2009
. . .
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a group that the Southern Poverty Law Center designated as a hate group, obviously does not agree. Tuesday and Wednesday, they held their annual lobby days in the nation's capital to push their anti-immigrant, enforcement-only agenda on the members of Congress. FAIR - an unintentionally ironic acronym - also hosted a 'radio row' featuring far right anti-immigrant media personalities, including CNN's Lou Dobbs, who is said to be the group's favorite.
In response, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), America's Voice Educational Fund, the Center for New Community and the Campaign for Community Change launched an ad denouncing the role of FAIR 'in poisoning the health care and immigration debates with bigoted, xenophobic hate speech.' To see the ad go to www.seiu.org/images/FAIRflyer.jpg.
'We will not allow such a raging extremist group to hide behind this false veil of reform,' said SEIU Executive Vice President Eliseo Medina. 'By continuing to fan the flames of hate and fear, FAIR has contributed to rising levels of hate crimes and discrimination that we are seeing in immigrant communities across the country.'
Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics prove Medina right. They show that hate crimes are an increasing nationwide problem. Assaults against Latinos, the FBI reports, have been on the rise for the past four years. Similarly, the Southern Poverty Law Center has reported that the number of hate groups targeting Latinos across the country has also soared during the same period.
