Stolen Truck From Alaska Yields Nearly A Ton Of Marijuana

Tucson, AZ --Yesterday, Border Patrol Agents assigned to the Tucson Station seized $1.5 million worth of marijuana near Arivaca, AZ.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., agents from the Tucson Border Patrol Station working south of Arivaca discovered a stolen pickup truck from Alaska hidden in the desert. The pickup truck, a green Ford F250, was discovered in the desert near Tres Bellotes Ranch Rd. concealed under a large desert camouflage tarp. Agents at the scene searched the vehicle and discovered 89 bundles of marijuana concealed within the cab, and bed of the truck. Agents did conduct an extensive search of the area for those involved with the smuggling.

The marijuana, which weighed 1,880 pounds and estimated at $1,503,680, has been turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Since the beginning of the Fiscal Year 2005 (October 1, 2004), agents in the

Tucson Sector have interdicted and seized 200,323 pounds of marijuana, valued at over $160.2 million. This compares to 203,294 pounds seized within the same time period last year.

The Border Patrol is a division of the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, a new agency within the Department of Homeland Security, responsible for managing and securing our nation's borders.
