4,377 pounds of pot seized on Tohono O'odham Nation

Tucson, AZ - 12/4/04 - 2130 hours MST

This is Rob Daniels from the U.S. Border Patrol's Tucson Sector Headquarters, in reference to a pair of marijuana seizures on the Tohono O' odham Nation earlier today. All total, more than 4377 pounds of marijuana have been seized by agents from the Casa Grande Border Patrol Station.

In the first seizure this morning at approx. 10:30, agents were checking a house trailer on the west side of the village of Topawa, near FR19 mp17. After following tracks to the location, agents found two Mexican nationals along with 53 bundles of marijuana. The total weight of the drugs was just over 1690 pounds worth an estimated 1.35 million dollars. The subjects and the drugs were turned over to the Tucson office of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The most recent seizure occurred this afternoon at approx. 2:30. Agents from Casa Grande Station stopped a pair of stolen vehicles near the village of Cocklebur. Inside the Ford F250 and Chevy Tahoe were 87 and 71 bundles weighing a total of 2687.5 pounds, worth an estimated 2.1 million dollars. This was in the same area that agents seized more than 2500 pounds of marijuana on 11/30, also involving the use of trucks.(located just off of FR15, just south of I-8, SW of Casa Grande.)

That amounts to a total of more than 14,700 pounds of marijuana seized in the Casa Grande Station area since October 1st, while the Tucson Sector has seized more than 85,000 pounds in the same time period.
