In "California, the End of White America," (November) Ron Unz argues that the struggle over immigration could "break America." In his June 13, 1998, Portland State immigration speech, President Clinton said, "But mark my words, immigration of this sweep and scope could threaten the bonds of our union." Immigration is an extremely important issue. More reason to take care when discussing it.
CLICK HERE to hear President Clinton's remark (Portland State University). Unz argues that much of the concern over immigration can be linked to the 1992 Los Angeles riot. Discounting reports that the riot involved immigrants, he says, "...the rioters were overwhelmingly black." On May 6, 1992, the Washington Post reported: "At a Cabinet meeting today, Attorney General William P. Barr said nearly one-third of the first 6,000 riot suspects arrested and processed through the court system were illegal aliens..." More than 60% of those arrested during the riots were born outside the United States (Washington Post, May 20, 1992, Page A02). More than half the rioters in Los Angeles were immigrants or illegal aliens.
Unz goes on to argue that illegal aliens are coming to California for work, not welfare. Yet, data from Los Angeles County shows that the vast preponderance of new AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) claims since 1991 were for families headed by an illegal alien mother (personal communication, Mark Tajima, L.A. County Welfare Department). Moreover, Dr. William Frey of the Miliken Institute reports that immigrant family reunification is a greater draw than jobs. More "immigrants" prefer California to Texas because of differential welfare benefits. In California, AFDC is an anchor for family reunification and illegal immigration.
Unz argues that Latinos and others are "filling every available job niche in California." Recently, Internet giant EarthLink, based in Pasadena, California, found that 95% of Southern California applicants could not qualify for entry level jobs in customer phone support. The company had to move the operation to northern California.
Unz says that "Voices (sic) of Citizens Together...merely used illegals as an effective stalking horse for an attack on immigration in general." For eight years, our organization has fought illegal immigration, period.
Mr. Unz says that Proposition 187 "banned all non-emergency government services and their children..." Not true. If the child was born in the United States, and a huge number are, not only is it eligible for any public services, the mother can benefit from AFDC, and a huge number do.
Unz says Proposition 187 was unconstitutional. Yet, after Governor Davis executed a "partial birth abortion" on 187, Carlos Holguin, one of the lawyers who sat in on the median process, confessed that 187 was killed because they didn't want to risk sending it to the U.S. Supreme Court (La Opinion, August 1, 1999).
Unz goes on to say that today's immigrants are as productive and assimilative as Europeans were. For Latinos, and they are by far the largest group of "immigrants" in California, all evidence, including that produced by Dr. Dowell Myers of USC, points in the opposite direction.
Mr. Unz also makes errors of omission. He failed to report that the flood of Latino immigrants into California was made possible by the Ford Foundation and other liberal controlled institutions. He failed to report that Mario Obledo, co-founder of the Ford-backed Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) told a 1998 Los Angeles radio audience that "California was going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn't like it should leave." [RealAudio File] . Obledo won a 1998 Presidential Medal of Freedom. Unz also failed to report that Art Torres, chairman of the California Democratic Party once said that "Proposition 187 is the last gasp of white America in California."
The Los Angeles Unified School District Board recently fired Mexican American superintendent Ruben Zacarias for gross negligence. For their courageous act, Frank del Olmo, Associate Editor of the Los Angeles Times, said that an "ethnic political war" had started and that Latinos would take out "retribution" on those who sought to have him removed ("The Long Knives Are Out for City's Puppeteers, "Los Angeles Times, Sunday, October 31, 1999).
On August 4, 1999, the California Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa was pictured on the front page of the Los Angeles Times along with Mexican President Zedillo applauding the defeat of Proposition 187. Villaraigosa is a Mexican nationalist. He is a member of Mexico's fifth column in the United States.
Mr. Unz plays fast and loose with the truth, but he does know one thing; California is headed for a catastrophe. The threat to our nation is Mexican nationalism and "la Reconquista," the process of returning the southwest to the jurisdiction of Mexico. Unz' characterization of those who fight illegal immigration as "white nationalists" is not only wrong, it is an outrageous insult to millions of Americans who are fighting to save California.
