LOS ANGELES - Prominent conservative commentator and writer Bruce Herschensohn today endorsed gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon, calling him "the principled conservative in the race."

"I am endorsing Bill Simon because I know him to be a man of principle who never surrenders the ideals of the United States for political expediency," Herschensohn said. "I wish that was a common trait of all who enter political life, but it isn't. Californians are living through a budget crisis, an energy crisis, a slumping economy and more and more state regulations that arrest our liberties. In short, so many of those things that have made California golden, have recently become the color of rust. I am more than aware that some have encouraged Bill to wait and sit out this election and run at another time. I have encouraged Bill to do just the opposite because principles can't afford to wait - and California can't afford to wait. These are especially fragile and dangerous times and Californians deserve the best - now. That's Bill Simon."

Simon welcomed the endorsement of a man known as one of California's most prominent conservative icons. "It is both humbling and gratifying to be the recipient of such high praise from a man of Bruce Herschensohn's public stature and keen intellect. With the help of respected leaders such as Bruce and our grassroots network of motivated conservatives across California I know we are well equipped to go forth and reclaim California for every hardworking, taxpaying family," said Simon.

Bruce Herschensohn is a well-known former commentator for KABC television in Los Angeles and the Republican nominee in the 1992 closely-fought battle for U.S. Senate in California. Herschensohn is a Senior Policy Fellow with the Claremont Institute and a respected conservative voice nationwide.

Bill Simon formally announced his intention to run for the Republican nomination for Governor on November 2. He has been an outspoken critic of Davis' failure to address the looming budget debacle and the Governor's fiscal mismanagement of California's coffers. Simon has received widespread acclaim in the past week for his three-point economic plan to rebuild California's economy.
