12/20/00 - Penman's Letter to Complainer

Not even criticism from prominent Latino attorney Florentino Garza, the epitome of dignity and a friend of Penman's, made any difference. Garza said he was stunned by Penman's letter, which he said appealed "openly to the racists and the rednecks of our community."

1/7/01 - Letters - . . . San Bernardino City Attorney James Penman's letter to Valente Duran offering to pay for transportation back to his home was actually a very kind gesture, inasmuch as Mr. Duran feels he is being mistreated and expressed his feelings by making the remark, "In Mexico, they treat us better than here."

1/11/01 - Letters - As a Hispanic-American and the daughter of immigrants, I am appalled by the comments made by Valente Duran. Perhaps he would be so kind as to refresh my memory. Has Mexico changed so radically that they now take better care of their displaced citizens than the U.S.? Would the Mexican government be taking care of him by seeing that he and his family have a roof over their head and food to eat?

1/13/01 - Letters - . . Valente Duran has been quoted as saying, "In Mexico, they treat us better than here." Duran should go down to the border and check very carefully. I think they have removed all barriers that keep unhappy Mexicans from returning home.
