CONGRESS OMITS KEY SECURITY PROVISIONS FROM 9/11 COMMISSION BILL

(Sacramento, CA--December 8, 2004)

"The House and Senate decision to pass the 9/11 Commission bill without the key border security and secure document provisions has let down the country, was irresponsible and has left Americans at risk." commented Mike Spence, head of Save Our License (SOL), a ballot initiative that would do what Congress and the White House seem unwilling to do. "It has also left the people of California with a job to do."

The Save Our License Constitutional Amendment ballot initiative would deny valid state driver's licenses or government identification cards to illegal aliens and terrorists. "If the elected representatives won't defend our identity documents, the people must again do their job," said Spence.

"The State of California should never be in the position of providing identity documents, and potential aliases, to illegal aliens, criminals and terrorists," he added. "No state should issue a document to someone whose identity they cannot be reasonably certain of. The Save Our License Initiative when passed by the people will guarantee that California will be diligent about who receives a California driver's license."

This bi-partisan fumble of an important public safety issue like driver's license security is not unexpected, but it is disappointing. Fortunately, Californians are in the position of providing document security with the initiative process.

"The nineteen 9/11 hijackers had 63 driver's licenses from five states. Those licenses allowed the murderers to blend into our society, open bank accounts and ultimately board those planes on September 11th and slaughter 3,000 Americans. That must never happen again, and our initiative takes steps to prevent that from happening again."

SOL would add to the California constitution, "The State shall not authorize or provide to any alien not lawfully in the United States, a driver's license or government identification card," and other benefits "unless those benefits or services are required to be provided pursuant to federal law."
