Mexico City - Nov. 16, 2002 -- The man confirmed
this week by the U.S. Senate as Washington's new ambassador to
Mexico said Friday that he was in favor of "earned legalization"
for undocumented Mexican immigrants, a newspaper here reported.
-- The 43-year-old Texas Republican denied relations between
Mexico and the United States have deteriorated because of disagreements
over how to deal with Iraq. - "Garza
will be a powerful ambassador and he will be more attentive to
immigration issues, because he already knows what kind of problems
we have on the border and he can immediately identify the best
means to handle and help to resolve them," [Mexican senator
Oscar] Luebbert said. -- "He is a good ally for Mexico
and it was a good selection, given his Mexican roots, and as
a Hispanic, he surely will be an important ally on immigration
issues." -- Sen. Lydia Madero, who represents the state
of Tamaulipas, said, "the confirmation of Garza will help
us a lot with the problems on both sides of the border, such
as the pending immigration deal and the water problems we have

The head FBI agent in El Paso has abruptly retired
amid complaints against him from Mexican officials, a newspaper
reported Saturday. -- During Crawford's tenure in El Paso, Mexican
officials criticized him for an FBI operation targeting thieves
who crossed the border to steal from Union Pacific trains. --
....U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza ordering Crawford not to make
any more public statements about Mexico.  |
