Brown Beret displays Mexican flag in front of Veterans
Memorial Cemetery during July 4th attack on Americans

On the Fourth of July, 1996, Americans were attacked in Westwood because they were Americans and because they were carrying the American flag. The attacks were unprovoked.

The fight started when six Americans, including Robert Schwartz, went to the corner of Wilshire and Veteran to direct traffic to our rally which was assemblying 400 feet away behind the federal building. As these six Americans approached the corner they were assaulted by over sixty people, who we believe were mostly Mexicans, who had suddenly appeared on the opposite side of the street next to the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

When word of the attacked reached the Americans who were behind they federal building, they came forth and occupied two corners of Wilshire and Veteran, forcing the Mexicans to retreat to the north side of Wilshire.

The police, who had been notified on July 3 of the threat of the counter demonstration by Voice of Citizens Together, did little during the initial attack to protect Americans.

"This is an outrage," said Glenn Spencer, president of Voice of Citizens Together, "we were having a peaceful demonstration on the Fourth of July and we were visciously attacked by those who are invading the United States with hostile intent."
