NEWS RELEASE

MAJOR PRESS CONFERENCE

10 a.m. Thursday, November 20

Protect Arizona NOW (PAN) invites you to a major press conference being held on the east Capitol grounds (1700 W. Washington St., Phoenix -- Map & Directions) at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 20. Support for the PAN initiative will be announced from over two dozen legislators, as well as other state and local leaders.

PAN Director Kathy McKee says that while there are multiple needs being addressed by this press conference, "We're all baffled by the constant, erroneous spin by some media that nobody, supports our initiative. Every poll under the sun shows that over 3 out of 4 Arizonans support our grassroots effort. So, is the implication that elected officials Don't support it? This press conference will dispel that myth too. If our opponents and the media want to be accurate, they need to say a handful of people, including Gov. Napolitano, both Arizona Senators, and the Congressional delegation, Don't support our initiative. Of course, the overwhelming majority of people in Arizona are not budging on this, so if elected leaders want to maintain their disconnect from us, they are choosing to make themselves irrelevant to this topic."

PAN Sr. Advisor Rep. Russell Pearce, adds, "More Americans need to hold politicians accountable for what is going on in our neighborhoods, our state, and our country.. May I suggest that the most important thing we can do to protect our citizens from abuse and fraud is to support our Constitution and enforce our laws. One of the greatest threats we have is uncontrolled illegal immigration. It is the Trojan Horse that is treated like a Sacred Cow!!!!, I am very disappointed in those in office who run from their #1 responsibility to protect Life, Liberty, and Property. I cannot stand by and ignore the fact that this country is being destroyed by mass invasion, while some act like nothing is wrong. Anyone who doesn,t take a stand and insist that our laws be enforced is aiding in the destruction of this great nation. Just look to our west at how loud the folks in California spoke out for ignoring the criminal violence and economic violence in their state. (In Arizona, AHCCCS grew from $200 to million in 2001 to $1.2 billion in 2003, over 500%, not to mention the impact to our healthcare system, criminal justice system, educational system, violence in our neighborhoods, millions of American workers displaced with no jobs, and on and on. This initiative is about preventing fraud at our places of elections and abuse of your tax dollars. A major purpose of this press conference is let citizens know that there are a large number of legislators

(probably the largest number in any state in America) that take their oaths seriously, revere and uphold the Constitution, are willing to stand up and be counted, and care about representing their constituents."

McKee concludes, "This is a defining moment in Arizona politics, where the wheat gets separated from the chaff. It is so important to the citizens and taxpayers of this state that two radio stations are covering the press conference live. Plus let me share the words of one of our supporters who is taking a vacation day from his job, taking his four children out of school, and driving over 4 hours to bring them to attend this press conference:"

Our children are taught in school about the Constitution and about the way our forefathers framed this great country, but whose responsibility is it to educate them on the reality of our government today? Who will tell them about the partisanship and greed that run rampant in our government? Do we want them to just accept that corruption and pandering are unquestionably included in the way our government is run? If there are elected officials trying to do what,s right in the midst of today,s political climate, then it is our duty to show support for them. And it is our duty to educate our children on this as well. It only gets worse from here if we Don't stand up. I figure, at the very least, we owe it to our children to let them see our, government give away their country firsthand; and to know that their familyalong with some honest and courageous elected officialsdidn,t just sit by and let it happen.,

Several legislators will be on-hand to answer questions from the media as well as the public. We hope to see you at the press conference.

Along with fellow elected officials, small businessmen and women, community activists and thousands of concerned citizens, we would like to voice our support for the Protect Arizona NOW Initiative.

Our initiative would only require the enforcement of laws already on the books with regard to the eligibility of public benefits. People registering to vote would be required to "prove they are U.S. citizens" when they register to vote. When they go vote, they only have to provide a photo or other acceptable I.D. (spelled out in the initiative).

For too long, our porous borders have allowed millions of immigrants to illegally enter the United States, circumventing our generous immigration laws and undermining our sovereignty. While many journey here to work and pursue the American dream, an increasing number have enrolled themselves in taxpayer-subsidized welfare programs, draining state resources at an alarming rate.

While no one wants to bar hard working individuals from services to which they are entitled, it is not fair or lawful for non-citizens to reap the benefits of citizenship at the expense of law-abiding taxpayers.

This modest measure simply requires state agencies to verifiably abide by regulations already in statute, and prevents our welfare system from being abused by those who voluntarily chose to disregard the law.

While some have mistakenly characterized this initiative as anti-immigrant, we disagree. By ensuring that our current statutes are enforced, this initiative encourages legal immigration and preserves the rule of law that makes this country so attractive to those yearning to be free.

We are disappointed that some have chosen to oppose this initiative in support of the status quo. As elected officials, we must respond to the demands of our constituents, for whom this issue is paramount.
"I think it is a duty in those entrusted with the administration of their affairs to conform themselves to the decided choice of their constituents." -- Thomas Jefferson to John Jay, 1785.
Several recent Polls including a recent KAET TV/ASU Poll show that the people of Arizona support Protect Arizona NOW. KAET-TV (PBS here in Phoenix) and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at ASU between September 18-21, 2003. Results were:

The Poll showed: Rural voters (83%), self-identified conservatives (85%), independents (83%) and Republicans (83%) were most supportive of the measure, most likely to vote (85%).

This means that those voters with an opinion support us by a landslide! PAN is a winner, folks.

This is codification of:
*GOPUSA Poll was 96% in favor of the PAN Initiative.

*ProjectUSA Poll that was 95% in favor of this initiative.
*ROPER Poll (a scientific poll) that had American's 85% in favor of enforcing immigration laws.
*CNN Poll 85% in favor of immigration laws enforced.

*Insight on the News/Insight Magazine 95% support for the PAN Initiative.

*FrontPage Magazine Poll 95% in favor of our Initiative.
