Action Alert from FAIR
November 18, 2004 - 8:35 am PSTIt's Make or Break Time to Get Immigration-Security Reform
Calls Needed Immediately to House Leadership
It's make or break time on the 9/11 Commission immigration security provisions.
House Conferee Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) has been a vocal advocate for including the House identification security provisions in the final bill and has held out against stubborn opposition from Senate conferees. House leadership has also been on our side, but they are under immense pressure to make a deal. Conferees appear to have reached compromise on other aspects of the bill. President Bush is pressing Congress to get legislation passed before the end of this week's lame duck session, and House leaders may be tempted to buckle under the deadline.
We need to burn up their phone lines with calls urging them to hold out for these critical immigration provisions.
Immediate Action Needed:
Please call House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) (202-225-0600) and House Majority Leader Tom Delay (R-TX) (202-225-4000) immediately.
Identify your call as pertaining to the conference currently underway to iron out legislative differences between the House and Senate bills to implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations, H.R.10 and S. 2845.
Leave a message thanking them for their leadership on the immigration provisions of the legislation so far and urging them to hold out for these provisions. Tell them these reforms are critical to homeland security and will provide immediate protection. If the 9/11 Commission bill is passed without them, it will take years before the intelligence reforms take effect. The nation needs immediate protection.
FAIR Thanks You
