Rep. Raul Grijalva is seen here leaving San Pedro River. He had arrived with a group that violated the law and drove their vehicles onto the San Pedro River Riparian area, including Channel 4 News out of Tucson. (Telemundo did the same thing) Grijalva and environmentalists were at the river to talk about the impact of building a fence to stop illegal aliens. Glenn Spencer of American Border Patrol heard of their presence and appeared just as the interviews were being completed. He reminded all present that they had violated the law and illegally entered the riparian area. He also said that they had trespassed on his property to get to the river. (Glenn then learned that one of his neighbors told them it was OK -- it wasn't.) Glenn told the reporters that ABP had smuggled simulated weapons of mass destruction along the river into Sierra Vista and Tucson four times and that it was a national security problem. He told the gathering of a news story running today that suggested that nearby Fort Huachuca might be a target of terrorists. At about this time, according to Mike Christie of ABP, a Border Patrol agent arrived in his vehicle to warn the gathering that he had just chased three people with large backpacks back across the border a few feet from where they were standing. All promptly left. |
