Paper Drops ABP Fly Along

November 10, 2008

American Border Patrol reports that it has rescheduled the start of its aerial survey of the border originally set for today until Monday, December 1st. According to ABP head Glenn Spencer, ABP changed its schedule because a reporter with a major Arizona newspaper cancelled his plans to fly along as the survey was being conducted.

Spencer said ABP would normally have conducted its survey starting on Dec. 1st but two weeks ago the reporter had called and asked if it could move the schedule up to the Nov. 10th so he could fly along and get the status of the border fence in time for a planned news story. "We were delighted to cooperate because it would have been the first time a major newspaper gave us coverage," Spencer said.

Spencer said that the reporter e-mailed him on Friday saying his management cancelled the ride along out of concern for safety and insurance. The report told Spencer that management had not raised these concerns when he first proposed the idea. "Over the past three years I have flown plenty of journalists along the border and there was never a concern over safety," Spencer said.

According to Spencer, with the exception of reporters from Europe, none of the U.S. journalists were flying along to do a story on ABP's border work. Spencer said in one case he flew a CNN crew along the border only to have them smear him.

Spencer says the insurance excuse is just a cover. "We have had news organizations ask us for proof of insurance and we gave it to them;" Spencer said, "but this newspaper didn't even bother to ask."

"The hard evidence makes it very clear that the major media are just organs for the extreme left and do no want the American People to know what is really going on at the border - especially if it comes from American Border Patrol" Spencer added.
