Telemundo Caught Trespassing in Riparian Area

No respect for our laws

October 24, 2007

Despite clearly posted signs prohibiting unauthorized vehicles, an SUV belonging to Telemundo of Tucson drove through the San Pedro Riparian area and got stuck in the San Pedro River. Glenn Spencer of American Border Patrol happened upon the scene as he was escorting Mark Levin, a photojournalist from the Sierra Vista Herald, who shot photos of the incident. "Not only was the road clearly marked, there was a sign right on the river that said no motor vehicles," said Glenn Spencer of ABP.

Spencer and photojournalist Levin were returning from a walk along the border where Levin shot a photo that appeared on the front page of his newspaper the next day.

"Mark and I walked about three miles that afternoon." Spencer said. "We didn't try to drive through the Riparian area because we knew it was against the law," he added.

The Telemundo personnel were eager to get their vehicle removed but seemed to be reluctant to call a tow truck operator because they said they had only $200 with them. "I don't think they wanted their company to know what they did," Spencer said.

Spencer returned to his border ranch and posted a photo that was seen on AmericanPatrol.com in less than an hour after it was taken.

About an hour later, Spencer and Mike Christie of ABP returned to the river to see that a private tow operator, Big Tow out of Sierra Vista had pulled the SUV out of the river.

According to a Patriots' Border Alliance volunteer who was visiting Spencer's ranch, another SUV with Fox Television markings had been seen with the Telemundo SUV and was apparently looking for help to get the Mexicans rescued.

"Not only did Telemundo violate U.S. government regulations when it entered the riparian area, they also trespassed on my property. " Spencer said. Spencer notified the Cochise County Sheriffs Department of the trespass however the Mexicans were gone before a Sheriffs Deputy could reach the scene.

"This is another example of how the Mexicans have absolutely no respect for America and its laws," Spencer added.
