Mexican Threatens Peter Gadiel over Sham ID
The following is the contents of a letter received by Mr. Peter Gadiel of 911 Families for a Secure America:
CONSULADO GENERAL DE MEXICO
New York, NYApril 15th, 2005
Mr. Peter Gadiel
[Address information deleted]Dear Mr. Gadiel:
On April 13, during the "CNN Tonight with Lou Dobbs" program [see transcript], you presented a document which you characterized as a "Mexican consular" identification card.
The document you showed in the program misleads and deceives the general public about the card currently being issued by all Consulates of Mexico in the United States. As you are certainly aware and as was showcased on the "CNN Tonight with Lou Dobbs" program on Monday April 11, 2005 [see transcript], Mexico, in an effort to enhance the security of the documents it provides to our nationals living in the United States, began issuing a highly sophisticated card with 14 security features to prevent forgery and non- Mexican nationals from obtaining a consular ID.
The old laminated cards, like the one you have been presenting with a photograph of yourself, have been replaced and since March 2002 are no longer valid. Moreover, we have asked all Mexican citizens in the United States to exchange the old card for the new one and to immediately report any misuse, possession of a forged consular identification card, or the fraudulent acquisition of said identification card.
In this regard, I would kindly ask you to surrender to this Consulate General the forged identification card which you have claimed you purchased in California in order to begin the corresponding investigation along with the federal authorities in New York and California. I am also advising you that our attorneys are currently exploring all legal avenues on this matter to determine responsibilities in the purchase and use of a forged Mexican government issued ID.
Sincerely,
Arturo Sarukhan
Consul General of Mexico
