Don't Let Conferees Drop Immigration Provisions in Pre-election Rush to Pass 9/11 Bill

In a rush to pass the 9/11 Recommendations Implementation bill before the elections, House and Senate conferees might drop the immigration provisions.

Today, we ask that you call four targeted conferees. These conferees have been the most vocal in their opposition or support for the immigration provisions.

If you are a constituent, say so when calling. If they ask and you are not, say that you are calling because this decision has enormous national consequences and that this legislation affects you as well as their constituents.

Action Needed:

* Please call Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) and leave the following message:

"My name is (insert name). This call is in reference to the conference on S. 2845 and H.R.10. I'm calling to urge the Senator to include the identification security and immigration enforcement provisions in the final bill to implement the 9/11 commission recommendations. Anything less is only a half measure to protect homeland security. It will be years before we see any positive results from merely rearranging the intelligence community. If the identification security and immigration enforcement provisions are included, the nation will see immediate protection from terrorists."

* Please call Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) and leave the following message:

"My name is (insert name). This call is in reference to the conference on H.R.10 and S. 2845. I'm calling to thank the representative for holding the line against those who seek to drop the critically important identification security and immigration enforcement provisions from the final bill. Please continue to oppose any efforts to bring legislation to the floor that does not include these much needed provisions. It will be years before we see any positive results from merely rearranging the intelligence community. If the identification security and immigration enforcement provisions are included, the nation will see immediate protection from terrorists."

Status of Conference:
The conferees, unable to come to a consensus last week, are still deliberating. House rules require Speaker Hastert to give 72 hours notice during recess before a House vote and Majority Leader Frist has promised his colleagues 72 hours to review the final agreement before putting it on the floor. With the elections vastly approaching, we expect a decision to be made by the end of the day. The conferees will either decide on a final bill or will postpone consideration until the lame duck period after the elections.

We have heard that they are focusing first on reaching an agreement over the intelligence section of the bill. If they reach agreement on intelligence, the threat is that they will take up the bill on Friday in an effort to reach agreement before the elections - leaving the immigration provisions hanging out to dry.

Tell the targeted conferees that no bill is doing enough to protect the nation from terrorists if it doesn't include the identification security and immigration enforcement provisions.
