CALLS TO YOUR REPRESENTATIVE ARE NEEDED IMMEDIATELY.

We have just obtained information that the White House is pushing the House leadership to quietly put an extension of Section 245(i) on the House Suspension calendar, possibly as soon as this week (for more details on Section 245(i) see the end of this email)!

Thanks to all of you who responded to our Action Request last week and called the CJS conferees, an extension of Section 245(i) was dropped from the Commerce, Justice and State Appropriations bill. This was a major victory given the enormous pressure being exerted on the CJS conferees from the White House for an extension. However, as we warned you last week, the battle is not yet won!

If Section 245(i) is put on the House Suspension calendar (which may happen as soon as THIS WEEK), it will take a one-third plus one vote to defeat it. This means we need approximately 145 votes AGAINST Section 245(i) to defeat it.

Because this push for Section 245(i) is being done behind the scenes and largely at the request of the White House, many Representatives are not aware that will probably come up on the Suspension calendar. This is why your phone calls are needed immediately.

to find the phone number for your Representative. Please call your Representative and tell him/her that 245(i) might come up on the Suspension calendar and ask him/her to vote AGAINST it. You may want to mention some of the reasons listed below why 245(i) is a bad idea.

Please also go to www.NumbersUSA.com and send or re-send a fax to your Representative asking him/her to vote against Section 245(i). Remember to change or add language as you see fit.

We have a real chance to beat Section 245(i), which is it is most important that you call your Representative. With your help, we will win this one for the American people.

SECTION 245(i):

Section 245(i) is an immigration provision that allows certain illegal aliens to pay a $1,000 fine to adjust their status and remain in the country. Section 245(i) poses a national security threat by removing the all-important step of our embassies conducting background checks on potential immigrants in their home countries. 245(i) also leads to sham marriages and sham marriages have been tied to terrorism. In addition, Section 245(i) contributes significantly to the INS processing backlog of some 4.5 million.
